... short-circuits are a very demanding case for SOA. A short-circuit to ground forces the full power supply voltage (V+ or V–) across the conducting transistor. ... This important relationship is known as Ohm's law. It can be viewed as a causeandeffect relationship, with voltage the cause and current the effect. This is an empirical law like that for friction—an experimentally observed phenomenon. Such a linear relationship doesn't always occur . Recall that  ...

... Since both lamps are equally bright, the d.c. and a.c. supplies are transferring energy to the bulbs at the same rate. Therefore, the d.c. voltage is equivalent to the a.c. voltage. The d.c. voltage equals the r.m.s. value of the a.c. voltage. Notice that the r.m.s. value is about 70% (1/√2) of the ...

Buck converter

A buck converter is a voltage step down and current step up converter. The simplest way to reduce the voltage of a DC supply is to use a linear regulator (such as a 7805), but linear regulators waste energy as they operate by dissipating excess power as heat. Buck converters, on the other hand, can be remarkably efficient (95% or higher for integrated circuits), making them useful for tasks such as converting the main voltage in a computer (12V in a desktop, 12-24V in a laptop) down to the 0.8-1.8V needed by the processor.
