FACTORS AFFECTING POLLINATION AND SEED SET OF A RARE
FACTORS AFFECTING POLLINATION AND SEED SET OF A RARE

... Plants are pollinated by a variety of insects and grazed upon by both vertebrates and invertebrates. The plant has a patchy distribution generally composed of large patches surrounded by smaller patches. Patches can also be extremely small (one or two plants) and apparently isolated from other patch ...
Kelp Forests in California
Kelp Forests in California

... ABSTRACT.  Kelp forests, with their complex structure and high diversity and productivity, are the most charismatic of nearshore, subtidal communities in temperate waters. Knowledge of their natural history and ecology, however, was meager until the 1950s when scuba gave investigators the freedom to ...

Recovery Plan for Ord`s Kangaroo Rat in Alberta

... Desert rodents, in particular kangaroo rats, tend to be relatively long-lived (2-6 years, Jones 1993) and slow to reproduce compared to other mammals of comparable body size (Stearns and Crandall 1981, Kenagy and Bartholomew 1985, Brown and Harney 1993). These characteristics are thought to be neces ...

The ecology of restoration: historical links, emerging issues and

It is not clear to what extent lack of seeds limits recruitment in natural plant populations, and its importance relative ...

Western harvest mouse (Reithrodontomys megalotis)

... In the US, the western harvest mouse is a dominant member of grassland small mammal communities, reaching densities of 60 animals/ha within suitable habitat. In Canada, this species is naturally rare and occurs at low densities, typically comprising less than 10% of the small mammal community. Popul ...

Hunter-Gatherer Foraging Strategies in Tropical Grasslands: Model

... Hunter–gatherer adaptations to moist tropical grasslands are not well known from either the ethnographic or the archaeological record. This is unfortunate as grassland adaptations are clearly significant to human biological and behavioral evolution. The most effective strategy for remedying this pro ...

Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project

The Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project, originally called the Minimum Critical Size of Ecosystems Project is a large-scale ecological experiment looking at the effects of habitat fragmentation on tropical rainforest; it is one of the most expensive biology experiments ever run. The experiment, which was established in 1979 is located near Manaus, in the Brazilian Amazon. The project is jointly managed by the Smithsonian Institution and INPA, the Brazilian Institute for Research in the Amazon. The project was initiated in 1979 by Thomas Lovejoy to investigate the SLOSS debate. Initially named the Minimum Critical Size of Ecosystems Project, the project created forest fragments of sizes 1 hectare (2 acres), 10 hectares (25 acres), and 100 hectares (247 acres). Data were collected prior to the creation of the fragments and studies of the effects of fragmentation now exceed 25 years. As of October 2010 562 publications and 143 graduate dissertations and theses had emerged from the project.
