... The cardiac events that occur from the beginning of one heartbeat to the beginning of the next are called cardiac cycle. If the heart rate is 75 beats/minute, the duration of cardiac cycle is 0.8 second (0.5 s for diastole, 0.3 s for systole). Increased heart rate leads to decrease in cardiac cycle ...

... During diastole, blood from the atria fills the ventricles. Then the ventricles pump blood to your body or lungs. This pumping phase is called systole. The work of the heart changes with your body's needs. For example, when you exercise, your body needs more blood and oxygen. Your heart pumps harder ...

Mitral insufficiency

Mitral insufficiency (MI), mitral regurgitation or mitral incompetence is a disorder of the heart in which the mitral valve does not close properly when the heart pumps out blood. It is the abnormal leaking of blood backwards from the left ventricle, through the mitral valve, into the left atrium, when the left ventricle contracts, i.e. there is regurgitation of blood back into the left atrium. MI is the most common form of valvular heart disease.
