Little gaps in the myelin sheath, called 'Nodes of Ranvier', allow the action potential to move faster along the axon. The electrical signal is said to jump from node to node, thus it is called Saltatory ...

... TTX labeling would be distributed evenly along the entire length of a non-myelinated axon. c) dendrite TTX labeling would not be present because dendrites are passive membranes and thus do not have any voltage dependent channels. Researchers are also demonstrating that behavioral pathology is largely due to imbalances in one or more neurotransmitter systems. ...

Synaptogenesis

Synaptogenesis is the formation of synapses between neurons in the nervous system. Although it occurs throughout a healthy person's lifespan, an explosion of synapse formation occurs during early brain development, known as exuberant synaptogenesis. Synaptogenesis is particularly important during an individual's critical period, during which there is a certain degree of synaptic pruning due to competition for neural growth factors by neurons and synapses. Processes that are not used, or inhibited during their critical period will fail to develop normally later on in life.
