Assessing the risk to indigenous New Zealand biota from new exotic

... The Department of Conservation (DOC) has responsibility for protecting the New Zealand native biota from the impacts of introduced plant species over large areas of land. Currently, this includes controlling approximately 160 alien plant species (Owen 1997), assessing the risk from a further 1900 (H ...

Limiting resources and the regulation of diversity in phytoplankton
Limiting resources and the regulation of diversity in phytoplankton

... Abstract. Species diversity is a key concept in ecology, yet the mechanisms regulating diversity in most systems are not completely understood. To address this issue, we analyzed the relationship between phytoplankton diversity and limiting resources (N, P, Si, and light) over two summers in three l ...

Phytobenthic communities in the Baltic Sea succession

... The first stage in the succession is the colonisation of free space. Colonisation of free space generally occurs from three sources: via vegetative growth from neighbouring areas, propagule dispersal or from the spore bank (Ricklefs and Miller 1999). Biodiversity action plan

This article is about a conservation biology topic. For other uses of BAP, see BAP (disambiguation).A biodiversity action plan (BAP) is an internationally recognized program addressing threatened species and habitats and is designed to protect and restore biological systems. The original impetus for these plans derives from the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). As of 2009, 191 countries have ratified the CBD, but only a fraction of these have developed substantive BAP documents. The principal elements of a BAP typically include: (a) preparing inventories of biological information for selected species or habitats; (b) assessing the conservation status of species within specified ecosystems; (c) creation of targets for conservation and restoration; and (d) establishing budgets, timelines and institutional partnerships for implementing the BAP.
