Quanta and Waves - Calderglen High School
Quanta and Waves - Calderglen High School

... At the beginning of the twentieth century many experimental observations and theoretical problems associated with matter on the atomic scale could not be explained by classical physics. During the next three decades, a new theory was developed to explain the behaviour of tiny particles in a range of ...

... example, I have spoken about the north and south magnetic poles of a compass needle. The poles of a compass needle can in fact be explained in terms of the motion of electrons within the needle's atoms. But in other cases the description is simply the most fundamental thing there is and cannot be "e ...

...  You want to close an open door by throwing either a 400 gram lump of clay or a 400 g rubber ball toward it. You can throw either object with the same speed, but they are different in that the rubber ball bounces off the door while the clay just sticks to the door. Which projectile will apply the l ...

Since the conservation of quantity of motion had become one of the pillars of Cartesian natural philosophy, Leibniz' suggestion that the fundamental quantity of motion was different from the one Descartes had proposed was rejected out of hand by all good Cartesians. Quantum vacuum thruster

A quantum vacuum plasma thruster (or Q-thruster) is a proposed type of spacecraft thruster that would work in part by acting on the virtual particles produced by quantum vacuum fluctuations. This was proposed as a possible model for an engine that could produce thrust without carrying its own propellant. Some physicists working with microwave resonant cavity thrusters think that they might be the first examples of such an engine.
