... intriguing replica of its wild ancestor. It is similar in appearance, but most interestingly, its hunting behavior and other activity patterns remain essentially unchanged from the ancestral wild cat.2 Domesticated in Egypt about 4,000 years ago, the Felis catus has become America’s favorite pet. ... Beginning in 1931, eelgrass experienced a massive die-off all along the Atlantic Ocean in both Europe and North America. Both sides of the Atlantic were believed to have lost at least 90 percent of existing eelgrass populations (Thayer and Fonseca, 1984; Costa, 1988). Losses in some areas were even ...

The Role of Body Size in Complex Food Webs: A Cold - ePIC

... Recent research has shown that species from higher trophic levels (Pauly et al., 1998), large-bodied or slow-growing species, with late maturity tend to decline or go extinct more rapidly than those that are smaller (Cardillo, 2003; Layer et al., 2011; McKinney, 1997). This suggests that some life-h ...

This once abundant species has been in decline since the early part of the century, primarily through a combination of overharvesting, habitat loss, and predation by non-native species. Increasingly, the global community has recognized that while the last half-century has witnessed striking increases in global food production through intensive use of inputs, such practices may deplete natural resources and impair the ability of agroecosystems to sustain production into the future. ...

... Horses (Equus caballus) living in unmanaged, wild populations in Australia are generally known by three terms; feral horses, wild horses and brumbies. Any introduced domestic animal that lives in unmanaged, self sustaining, wild populations is by definition a feral animal. However, some people are u ...

Habitat conservation

Habitat conservation is a land management practice that seeks to conserve, protect and restore habitat areas for wild plants and animals, especially conservation reliant species, and prevent their extinction, fragmentation or reduction in range. It is a priority of many groups that cannot be easily characterized in terms of any one ideology.
