1) Statistics & Charts [.2]: For the variable AGE, obtain the following items via SPSS and attach a printout:
a) The Five-Number-Summary, Mean, Mode, Range, Standard Deviation
b) A dot plot of the data (found at: Graphs, scatter plot)
c) A box plot of the data (or draw your own)
d) The mean and median differ. In this situation, if you wanted to use only one of these statistics to discuss
the middle of your data, which would you select and why?
e) By the way, are these values statistics or parameters? Why?
2) Modified Boxplot Components [.4]: For the variable AGE, on the boxplot identify the five-number-summary points.
Next to it calculate the following values for the box plot and the distribution.
a) Determine the IQR of the data
b) Determine the upper and lower limits for the whiskers
c) Identify the adjacent points to which a whisker may be drawn (if any)
d) Identify outliers
3) Distribution Shape [.2]:
a) Looking at the dot plot for AGE and/or the box plot, how would you characterize the shape of the distribution?
b) Use Pearson’s Index of Skewness to determine if the distribution is skewed. What value would indicate a perfect,
bell-shaped distribution? Given the value you calculated, what can you say about this distribution?
4) Variation [.2]: Given an inaugural age of 69, how many standard deviations away from the mean was RR?
5) History Channel Trivia: Which two former Presidents died on the same day? The Bush’s are related, The Adam’s were
related as were the Roosevelt’s. Were the Cleveland’s related? Who had the longest inauguration speech and why was that
important historically? Are we still paying for the Spanish/American war? When was that war anyway?
