LESSON PLAN – CHEADLE HULME SCHOOL
CLASS : Year 12
TOPIC/N.C. MATCH
Founder effect/genetic bottleneck
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
To understand how the founder effect and genetic bottlenecks influence genetic diversity.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Good.....if you can model the founder effect and genetic bottlenecks.
2. Better......if you can interpret the results of the model in terms of the effect on genetic diversity.
3. Exceptional......if you can synthesise information on genetic diversity with your own
understanding.
RESOURCES
Projector, computer, calculators, skittles, bottles
SAFETY ISSUES/ RISK ASSESSMENTS/ COSHH etc.
N/A
PUPIL / TEACHER ACTIVITY
TIME
0-2
1. Objectives and outcomes of the lesson
2-5
2. Starter – students are to describe whether a series of different events would lead
to an increase or decrease in genetic diversity.
5-14
3. Main – introduce skittles activity as a means of modelling the founder effect and
genetic bottlenecks. Students are to work in pairs and answer the questions that
follow.
14-16
4. Students are to feedback on the activity and their answers to the questions. The
principles of the founder effect and genetic bottlenecks should be elucidated by
this point. References to real life examples will also be drawn upon.
16-21
5. Plenary – June 2009 exam question on the founder effect/genetic bottlenecks.
Students are to complete the assessment individually.
21-24
6. Students are to swap papers and use the mark scheme to annotate, score and
inform their partners on how to improve.
24-25
7. Pupil progress will be assessed at this point and objectives and outcomes will be
referred to once again.
