COURSE CODE:
CHM 226
COURSE TITLE:
Experimental Physical Chemistry 2
UNITS:
1
SEMESTER:
Omega – 2013/2014
COURSE LECTURER:
Ehi-Eromosele C.O. & Edobor-Osoh A.
TIME:
1 – 5 pm (Wednesdays)
LOCATION:
100L Chemistry Laboratory
A.
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF COURSE:
A selection of experiments designed to provide illustrations of the important parts of the
lectures in CHM226 Course. The experiments will afford the students the opportunity to
develop their quantitative and analytical skills. Topics include chemical equilibria,
kinetics of iodination of acetone, determination of molecular weight by freezing point
depression method, viscosity as a function of temperature, surface tension of liquids,
determination of surface tension of solutions, a study of the ternary system: benzene –
acetic acid-water, molecular mass determination by freezing point depression method,
conductivity measurements, determination of reaction rate and activation energy.
B.
COURSE OBJECTIVES/GOALS:
The purpose of this practical course is to:
 Provide illustrations of the important parts of the lecture courses in CHM 212
 Teach some of the practical techniques involved in Physical Chemistry
 develop a careful, painstaking and critical analytical attitude to practical work.
