Summary: The Force Questions
1. If two magnets are attracting each
other, what do you know about the
poles?
a. The attracting poles must be a
south and a north.
2. How does a compass work?
a. The compass needle is a magnet.
The compass needle interacts
with Earth’s magnetic field, and
the north pole of the compass
needle points north.
3. What will happen if you bring two
compasses next to each other?
a. The north pole on one compass
needle will attract the south pole
on the other compass needle.
4. If you have an unmarked magnet
bar, how can you find out which end
is the north pole?

Investigation 1
a. Hang the magnet on a string.
The pole that points north is the
north pole. Or bring a compass
close to one pole on the bar
magnet. The north pole of the
needle will be attracted to the
south pole of the magnet.
5. How can you turn a piece of iron
into a temporary magnet?
a. Put a magnet next to it. The
induced magnetism will exist as
long as the permanent magnet is
close.
