Drugs Commonly Used in Date-Rapes: Beer/liquor Alcohol Gamma Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) In the 1950’s, it was used as an anesthetic in Europe, but it caused seizures and did not relieve pain. Prior to 1990, it was sold in health food stores as a body builder, because it increases the amount of time in sleep when human growth hormones are produced. The FDA approved it for narcolepsy clinical trials (increases wakefulness the next day). Immediate intoxicant with anti-inhibitory properties (prosexual behavior and sexual arousal). Known as G, Grievous Bodily Harm, Liquid X, or Liquid Ecstasy. Most commonly disguised in Margaritas, Long Island Iced Tea, Goldschlager, etc. (has a salty, sometimes plastic taste). Can be in the form of a clear liquid, or a white powder, like laundry soap. Victim will feel very intoxicated within 20 minutes, peak action by 60 minutes, and plateaus by 90 minutes. It often causes nausea and vomiting; can cause respiratory arrest. 2.5 grams is sufficient to force deep, unarousable sleep. It is no longer in the blood after 4-5 hours. It is rapidly excreted in urine-may be gone in 12 hours, but has been detected up to 60 hours. Victim has no memory, may feel foggy, but will probably have more energy the next day. At least 30 known deaths from GHB. GHB carries higher penalties than Rohypnol. Rohypnol (Flunitrazepam) Benzodiazepine manufactured by Hoffman-LaRoche as a sleeping pill, anesthetic agent. Ten times more potent than Valium. Colorless, odorless, tasteless. Used in 80 countries, not approved in the United States. Street Terms include: Roofies, Roachies, La Rocha, R2’s, Mexican Valium, Rope, Rib, Rophies, Circles, Forget Me Drug/Pill, Getting Roached, Lunch Money Drug, Reynolds, Ruffles, Wolfies and Rowshay. The white tablet is being replaced by new oval, grayish green tablet that is hard to dissolve and releases a blue color (green in beer). Cost is $1 to $5 per tablet. No longer in blood after 4-6 hours. May be detected in urine up to 72 hours. Person will feel drunk and confused within 15 minutes. Induces a deep, unarousable sleep (around 8 hours) with retrograde amnesia. May experience cameo appearances. Victim wakes up disoriented, feeling hung-over, and is not sure if she was raped. Ketamine A general anesthetic used in veterinary surgery, with kids, and for burn dressing changes. Has an analgesic and amnesiac property. Liquid in pharmaceutical form, but may be powder. Known as Kit Kat, Special K. Rapid onset and short acting. Can cause slurred speech, unsteady gait, mechanical movements, monotone speech, and hallucinations. It is a close relative of PCP and can create similar violent behavioral effects. More expensive-$20.
