Unexcused absences in excess of these two absences will result in a deduction of 10% of your grade for each subsequent absence in excess of two. Excused absences should be reported to the Office of the Dean, (271-5444) and the Course Director at 2771-5099. Roll is recorded randomly; either the first or second hour. Dr. Settle will determine if an absence is excused (an example is attendance for a funeral, auto accident on the way to class). Interviews for postgraduate residency programs will be excused as necessary; please see Dr. Settle. Grading and Evaluation: There are two examinations, consisting of midterm and final examinations. GRADING SCALE: 90-100 80-89 70-79 <70 A B C F The midterm and final examinations may be a combination of short answer, truefalse, matching, or multiple choice items. To receive a passing grade in the class, you must pass both the midterm and final examinations. Proctors are present during examinations. If any questionable activities occur during, or are discovered after the examination, an investigation will follow and OUCOD honor policies will be upheld. You are expected to keep all exam information completely confidential, and not print, copy, discuss or share information about the items or their answers before, during, or after taking the exams. Honesty in an academic environment is a crucial part of the learning process, and Dr. Settle will follow up on any suspected allegations. COURSE POLICIES Default policies for the following unless otherwise noted: www.ouhsc.edu/admissions/handbook/Student_Responsibility.htm www.ouhsc.edu/admissions/handbook/Grading_System.htm www.ouhsc.edu/admissions/handbook/Class_Attendance.htm www.ouhsc.edu/admissions/handbook/Academic_Misconduct.htm OUCOD Student Handbook, 2008-2009, available on OUCOD website Communications: The course will use e-mail to communicate any revisions of the syllabus or schedule, or answer questions during the semester. Timeliness: Please be in your seat by the time class starts at 8:00. The instructors have to be here by 8:00 and it is disrespectful to show up late and wins you no goodwill points either. Course Textbook: There is a lot of information in the course. The required textbook is just that, it is required, and the chapters are ideally read prior to the presentation. CODE OF CONDUCT: Because you are in professional school, you will be expected to behave in a professional manner. Behavior inappropriate to the classroom environment will be documented and submitted to OUCOD’s Academic Dean, Dr. Coy. Your participation and questions are welcome in class. However, this does not include disruptive conversations with your classmates. Respect for the rights of others are fundamental expectations for all students. USE OF ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT Laptops may be used during class. Dr. Settle does not routinely monitor what is on your screen. You are still responsible for the material covered in class whether you choose to follow along or not. However, cell phones must be placed in a non-audible mode. You will have a break between hours when you can return calls if necessary. Recording of any type is not allowed during class. GRADE DETERMINATION: (% of final grade) Mid-Term Exam: Final Exam: 50% 50% Attendance: See above “Curving” of final grades: Item analyses are run for both examinations. Based on the item analysis, exams may be rescored. Therefore, a “curve” is rarely necessary for the grades in the class. Most of you will make A’s or B’s in this class. There have been some C’s in the past, and sometimes D’s and F’s. A “D” is not a passing grade at the College of Dentistry, so any average below “70” will result in a failing grade and must be remediated to a “C.” Examinations are not returned to you. If you wish to review your examination after the final grade is posted, please see Andie Stringfellow, OD Secretary. The course director is responsible for developing the terms of remediation.
