Mrs Goss’ Science News
September 6
Standard S3E1a:
Students will explain the difference between a rock and a mineral.
Standard S3E1b:
Students will recognize the physical attributes of rocks and minerals using observation,
measurement, and simple tests.
We will begin our study of rocks and minerals. We will also learn about the layers of the
earth.
Students will watch videos about rocks and minerals. We will also make AIMS booklets
that tell us about rocks and minerals. Experiments and investigations
about rocks and minerals will also be conducted. Students should also start reading pages
58-64 in their science books and become familiar with the following vocabulary words.
Vocabulary
1. mineral—a solid object found in nature that has never been alive(p 58)
2. hardness—the measure of how difficult it is for a mineral to be scratched (p60)
3. rock—a naturally formed solid made of grains of one or more minerals (p62)
A study guide will be provided for lesson 1 next week.
Students will now be changing classes for science and social studies on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
-Definition: A solid found in nature that has never been alive.
Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness
Talc is the softest mineral and the diamond is the hardest. A diamond will
scratch all other minerals.
Definition : The measure of how difficult it is for a mineral to be scratched.
--A naturally formed solid made of grains of one or
. more minerals.
