these two types of books?

1
2,149
+ 2,785
9 ones + 5 ones = 14 ones
Regroup 14 ones as 1 ten and 4 ones
4
Step 2
Add the tens.
11
2,149
+ 2,785
1 ten + 4 tens + 8 tens = 13 tens
Regroup 13 tens as 1 hundred and 3 tens
34
Step 3
1
2,149
+ 2,785
Add the hundreds.
1 hundred + 1 hundred + 7 hundreds = 9 hundreds
Bring the comma down.
,934
Step 4
Add the thousands.
2,149
+ 2,785
2 thousands + 2 thousands = 4 thousands
4,934
So, there are 4,934 history and science books altogether.
2. A beach is 4,415 yards long. If you traveled from one end of the beach to the other and back, how far
would you travel? Solve using at least two different methods.
You need to find 4,415 + 4,415.
Estimation:
4,400 + 4,400 = 8,800
You would travel about 8,800 yards.
Expanded Notation:
4,000 + 400 + 10 + 5 + 4,000 + 400 + 10 + 5
= 8,830
You would travel 8,830 yards.
3. James and his father went to a baseball game. His ticket cost $6.50, and his father’s ticket cost
$10.75. Find the total cost.
Find $6.50 + $10.75.
1
$6.50
+ $10.75
$17.25
Line up the decimal points.
Add.
Place the dollar sign in front of the dollars.
Place the decimal point in the answer.
The total cost is $17.25.
