Feminism Exercise
For Rachels, Chapter 11
Feminism and the Ethics of Care
Phase 1 [in small groups]
Explain Lawrence Kohlberg’s theory of moral development as described
in the text, highlighting the connection to the theories discussed in the
earlier chapter.
Now explain Carol Gilligan’s objection to Kohlberg’s theory and
describe the Ethics of Care. Why is this theory called ‘relationshipcentered’ (as opposed to ‘rule-centered)?
Phase 2 [combining groups, sharing answers, then...]
Highlight the difference between traditional ethical theories (like
utilitarianism and deontology) and the ethics of care by discussing cases
like
a. giving to worldwide charity organizations versus attending to
one’s own family and friends
b. vegetarianism and treatment of one’s (non-human) animal pets
What do these differences indicate? What are the implications for
ethical theory according to Rachels?
