WARM-UP
Song: Where is the love. (Black Eyed Peas)
Sts must listen and complete the first part of the song with the following words: KKK, mama, discriminate, trauma,
terrorism, mamas, race, drama, living, CIA, hate, The Bloods, The Crips
LEAD-IN: Sts must read the definitions and complete them with the correct organization.
The Blood, The Crips, The CIA, KKK
________________ is an intelligence agency of the United States Government. Its
primary function is obtaining and analyzing information about foreign governments,
corporations, and people, and reporting such information to the branches of the
Government.
___________________ is the name of several past and present fraternal organizations in
the United States that have advocated white supremacy, anti-Semitism, racism, antiCatholicism, homophobia, and nativism. These organizations have often used terrorism,
violence and acts of intimidation such as cross burning to oppress African Americans and
other groups.
____________ are one of the Los Angeles, California street gangs. They are identified by
the red color worn by their members, and their gang symbol is the word "blood" spelled
out with their hands. They are made up out of various sub-groups known as "sets" or
"tres" (trays) between which significant differences exist such as colors, clothing, and
operations. Since their formation they have branched out throughout the United States,
and even have even influenced youth groups using the same name in Europe.
____________ originating in Los Angeles, California, are one of the oldest, largest, and
most notorious gangs in the United States. They have been involved in murders,
robberies and drug dealing in the Los Angeles area. They are mostly identified by the
blue color worn by their members. What was once a single gang is now a loose network
of "franchises" around the United States. The gang primarily (but not exclusively) is
composed by African Americans. They have an intense rivalry with the Bloods and are
also known to feud with Chicano gangs.
PRACTICE:
Sts must discuss these questions in groups of three:








What kinds of violence are described in the song?
Is terrorism mentioned in the song? Explain.
Why do people use terror?
What should be done to prevent terror?
Why is terror more used in some countries than others?
Do you know of any forms of terror other than bombs?
Where were you during the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center buildings in New York City?
Are terror tactics ever effective? When?
LEAD-IN: The teacher will tell the sts that their country (and the world!!!) is very violent as well. Sts should
stand up and comment on the pictures on the walls. The teacher must bring pictures related to violence (but not
shocking images!!!), such as the World Trade Center, wars, etc…
After that, the teacher will give them a list of important terms related to crime. They must discuss the terms
with their friends.
Carjacking  A crime of taking a motor vehicle from the motorist or passenger, by use of force, fear or threat of force.
Home invasion robbery (HIR)  A crime in which one or more offenders enter a home to commit robbery.
Lookout  A person who helps a robber watching the police and may provide armed backup for the offender.
Shoplifting  the act of stealing goods that are on display in a store
Smuggling  illegal transport, in particular across a border. Taxes are avoided; or the goods themselves are illegal; or people are
transported to a place where they are not allowed to be.
Forgery  Imitation: a copy that is represented as the original.
Hijacking  The taking control of a public transport vehicle, such as an airliner or train to use the people aboard as hostages.
Kidnapping  Is the taking away of a person against the person's will.
PRACTICE: In pairs, sts will make a list of the types of violence in their city.
PRACTICE: In pairs, sts will discuss these questions:












Are there problems with drugs where you live?
Are you apprehensive about walking outside after dark?
Do you always lock your house? How about your car?
Do you believe that public executions would deter crime? If so, how?
Do you know someone who has been a victim of a violent crime?
Do you think gun control is a good idea? Explain.
Do you think people who use illegal drugs should be put in jail?
Do you think that punishment for violent crimes should be the same for juveniles and adults? Why/why
not?
Do you think that the death penalty would prevent crime in your country? Why (not)?
Do you think there is a link between drugs and crime?
Do you think there will be more or less crime in the future?
Do you think your country is a safe place to live? Why or why not?
PRODUCTION: In groups of five, sts will create a PLAN TO STOP THE VIOLENCE. Then, they’ll present it
to their friends.
