What Does Canada Look Like?
Regions Assignments Overview
Canada has a great diversity of people, landscapes and terrain as well as an abundance
of natural resources.
You will be assigned a project to complete for each of the regions. You may be working
in a group, with a partner or individually depending on the assignment. For each of the
regions you will need to read the corresponding chapter in the textbook to help you
with the answers to the worksheets.
When working in groups, students will be assessed on their individual contribution to
the overall assignment.
1.
Atlantic Region: Alphabet Book
As a group, you will design and complete an alphabet book for the Atlantic Region of
Canada.
Group Project Due: February 25th, 2016

Great Lakes-St. Lawrence: Song Project
Your job is to write a song/poem/rap to share everything you have learned about a
Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Region of Canada.
Your finished project must be:
- A song/poem/rap about Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Region of Canada
- Main ideas of the region should be well represented in your song. Information
should include key landforms, water, cities, natural resources, industries,
climate, recreation, famous people, etc.
- Time Limit: about 1-2 minutes
- Your song can be a parody or an original tune
- You may work independently or with a partner

Canadian Shield: Shoebox
Locate and decorate a shoebox. Make it bright, fun and interesting! The top of your
box should be decorated with a map of your region with important features and places
labeled. Each of the 4 side panels should be decorated to represent one of the
following:
- Natural resources
- Industry
- Physical features
- Tourist attractions
As a group, you will collect a minimum of 8 objects specific to your region to put in your
decorated shoebox. Items may include maps, rocks, tourism brochures, souvenirs,
pictures, songs, animals, books, artwork, etc.… You may also include any other

interesting and creative items of your choice. You will need to include a brief
description of each item and its importance to your region on an index card to be
included in your shoebox.

Interior Plain: Coat of Arms
With a partner, create a coat of arms representing the most significant contributions to
Canada’s heritage for the group you chose.
Your coat of arms will have:
- Significant symbols—represent the your most important contributions,
achievements or challenges
- Suitable motto—reflects the spirit or motivation of the group
- Visually appealing—grabs viewers' attention and is colourful
- Historically accurate—follows the rules of heraldry.

Cordillera Region: Totem Pole
The Native Americans believed that each animal had a spirit. These animals were used
on totem poles because of their special talents and the stories they told. You will select
a minimum of 3 animals to make your Totem Pole and tell your story.

Arctic Region: Impact of Climate Change on Arctic Animals
A brief study of the polar bear will introduce the effects of climate change on this
species of animal in the Arctic Region of Canada. You will then choose an Arctic animal
to research and write an editorial expressing your opinion on the effects of climate
change on your animals’ habitat. You will also create an action plan identifying how you
can make a positive impact on the environment.
