Balancing Equations
1. Being able to write, balance and correctly predict chemical reactions is one
of the most important skills in Chemistry and in most scientific fields.
Complete the following chemical reactions by balancing them and writing
their physical states. Predict the types of reactions as well.
a) __SnO2 +__ H2 → __Sn + __H2O
b) __KOH+__ H3PO4 →__K3PO4 +__H2O
c) __KNO3+__ H2CO3 → __K2CO3+__ HNO3
d) __Na3PO4 +__HCl→ __NaCl +__H3PO4
e) __TiCl4 +__ H20 → __TiO2 +__HCl
f) When chlorine gas reacts with methane, carbon tetrachloride and
hydrogen chloride are produced
g) Iron (III) oxide and carbon monoxide gas produce carbon dioxide gas and
iron.
h) Barium metal and water react to produce barium hydroxide and hydrogen
i) In a precipitation reaction, sodium hydroxide solution is mixed with Iron
(II) chloride solution. Sodium Chloride solution and insoluble Iron (II)
hydroxide are produced.
j) Copper and sulfuric acid react to form Copper (II) sulfate and water and
sulfur dioxide.
k) Calcium hydroxide and phosphoric acid react to form calcium phosphate
and water.
l) Aluminum bromide and chlorine gas react to form aluminum chloride
and bromine gas.
Empirical and molecular formulas
2. Empirical formulas (also includes some percent composition practice)
a) In your own words, CORRECTLY define what an empirical formula is.
Knowing the meaning of this term will make conceptualization and
calculation of related questions much easier.
b) A compound contains 259.2 g of F and 40.8 g of C. What is the
empirical formula for this compound?
c) What is the empirical formula for a compound that is 53.3% O and
46.7% Si?
d) What is the empirical formula for a compound that is 31.9% potassium,
28.9% chlorine, and 39.2% Oxygen?
e) What is the empirical formula for a compound that is 43.6% phosphorus
and 56.4% oxygen?

f) To find the molecular formula from the empirical formula, one must
determine the compound's ___________ (Hint: A two-worded name with
the abbreviation MM)
g) A compound's empirical formula is C2H5. If the molar mass is 58 g/mole,
what is the molecular formula?
h) A compound containing only hydrogen and oxygen is 5.9% hydrogen by
mass. The molar mass of the compound is 34 g/mole. What is the
molecular formula of the compound?
i) The mass percentage of water in the hydrate CuSO4 ·5H2O is
j) The mass percent water in a hydrate of Na2CO3 is 62.98%. What is the
molecular formula for the hydrate?
