HOUSING PORTFOLIO
CHAPTER ASSIGNMENTS
Chapter 1 & 2:
You have decided to enter a contest sponsored by the Advanced Housing Study
Committee. The committee is interested in finding new ideas for housing. The theme of
the contest is “Designing the Ideal House.” To enter the contest:
A. Describe in 150 words or less a new home that would be ideally suited for the
21st century.
B. Try to describe a home that could be used by many types of families or that
could be changed to adapt to a family’s needs.
C. Include facts about societal changes that support your design.
D. Entries will be judged on practicality and originality.
Chapter 4:
In 1587, a second group of English settlers tried to colonize Roanoke Island, off
the coast of North Carolina. Three years later, the settlers had vanished. You are a
historical investigator hired by a relative of one of the lost settlers to find some clues
about the living conditions for those who lived there. Using reference materials and the
Internet, research the type of housing these people set up on Roanoke Island. Write a
report for your client.
Chapter 5:
You have been hired to create a brochure to be given to visitors to a historic
home. (Choose a home in your area or work from an Internet site.) The brochure should
include information on life when the house was built, its architectural details, and any
modifications later made to the building. Include photos or drawings to enhance the
brochure.
Chapter 13:
Your client is an insurance agent who is leasing space in a new office building.
She has hired you to design a waiting area for her clients. The agent tells you that most of
the time the room would be used by no more than three or four people. She wants them
to feel comfortable, but also wants to convey that they can trust her with their business.
The waiting area is 8ft. x 12ft. Write an essay describing the ideas you would present to
her. Address all of the elements of design in your comments: space, line, form, texture,
and color.
Chapter 14:
You’ve been hired to plan a color scheme for a spacious, sunny great room in a
contemporary-style home. This combined kitchen and family room is the central activity
zone for your clients and their six-year-old twin boys. They want new furniture and floor
coverings and are willing to have the walls and kitchen cabinets painted. Existing colors
include a red brick fireplace, dark green kitchen countertops that resemble marble, and a
white range and refrigerator. Create a sample board that shows your proposed color
scheme. In writing, explain why you selected these colors. Place your completed sample
board and explanation in your portfolio.
Chapter 15:
You are helping a couple whose five-year-old grandson is coming to live with
them. Their spacious guest bedroom currently has a neutral color scheme with creamcolored carpeting, but they want it redesigned as a permanent bedroom for their
grandson. Prepare a list of questions you might ask the clients. What questions would
you like to ask the child? Decide on possible responses. From your mock interview,
write a description of the room you would propose. Include as many elements and
principles of design as possible, focusing on scale, emphasis, color texture, form, and
space. Cut photos from magazines and catalogs and sketch your ideas to illustrate your
presentation to the family.
Chapter 16:
Your client has converted a 12ft x 15ft. sunporch into a guest bedroom. This will
mainly be used every winter by her mother who lives with her for several months. Her
mother occasionally relies on a cane when she walks. She enjoys quilting and watching
the birds in the backyard. Blues and peaches are her favorite colors. Although the
contractor tied the room into the home’s existing heating and cooling system, it is slightly
cooler than the rest of the house. The new bedroom’s large window faces the north.
Submit a proposal identifying the materials and colors you would suggest for the
floor, walls, ceilings, and window treatments. Sketch the window treatment you select.
Write an explanation of your choices.
Chapter 17:
Choose one furniture style on which you will become an “expert.” Using print or
Internet resources, research information on the style. Study examples of the various
stages of that style. Find information that will help you do the following:
A. Discuss the historic, economic, and social highlights of the time period when
the style originated.
B. Discuss previous styles that influenced the style.
C. Collect illustrations of and describe the style.
Share your information by giving an oral report with visual aids.
Chapter 18:
Casual Living, a new furniture manufacturer, has hired you to design an
advertisement for its recliner lounge chair. The advertisement will run in several home
magazines. Keep the following information in mind as you prepare the art and the words
for the advertisement. The chair—for everyday use—is attractive, comfortable, and
durable. The company’s market research shows that working men and women over age
30 is the primary market for the chair. Begin by reviewing other advertisements for
furniture. Then design your ad, making sure to include the following elements:
A. A sketch of the recliner lounge chair with a member of the target market using
it.
B. A description of the materials and construction methods used. Include types
of joints.
C. A brief summary of what benefits the chair offers the buyer.

Early Home Design Picture Album
TaskIf you wanted to show someone what you looked like as an infant, you could show the
person a photo of yourself from a family picture album. You are about to put together a
picture album of home design in North America through the establishing of the Thirteen
Colonies by European settlers. Your album will display the many faces of home design.
It will also show that many of these early traditions in home building have survived into
this century.
PurposeYour purpose is to show what early homes looked like and how many of these
building styles still exist today.
ProcedureRead through Chapter 5 of your textbook, noting boldfaced terms and any drawings or
photographs of homes. The boldfaced terms will remind you of important features of
homes during this period, as well as the name of these features. Choose 4 pictures of
homes in your textbook to draw. Once you have created your pictures for your part of the
album, write captions for each image. The captions should include:
1, The style or type of home (log cabin, tepee)
2. The time period of the particular home.
3. The place of origin of the people who created this style.
4. Important features of the style, as well as any function feature serves.
