Directions: Complete the following assignments.

3. Complete the activities found on pages 180-181.
4. Divide a sheet of paper into 5 sections. Label the 4 Dynasties of Ancient China: Xia, Shang, Zhou, Qin,
and Han. List the achievements, Emperors, Wars, religions, government, society, territories, etc. that
happened during that particular Dynasty.
5. Sketch or re-create the physical map of China on page 183. Label the major rivers (Chinese names and
English names), mountains, plateaus, seas, etc.
6. Create a scrapbook that highlights the culture of a settlement in a region of China. Use illustrations and
captions to explain the influence that geography had on forming the culture in that area. Observe settlement
patterns, housing, crops, and clothing.
7. Write a legend that explains some element of early Chinese culture, geography, or government. Select a
topic and write a 200 word to 1-page story in form of an ancient legend. Ideas might be to explain the
geography of China, to explain how early kings solved problems by working with the people, the creation of
China, the development of social classes, explanations for the creation of mountains or government.
8. Create a brochure that summarizes the period of the Zhou dynasty. Include an interesting title page, a section
on Zhou government, its rise and fall from power, society, and the 3 main philosophers.
9. Make a chart about Chinese Philosophers
10. Create a graphic organizer about these 3 beliefs and teachings: Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism. The
graphic organizer may be in the form of a brochure, a short paper, a chart, or other. Explain the basic beliefs, the
founders, the main guidelines. Explain the ideas behind the philosophy. Use visuals.
11. Find 3-4 Chinese Proverbs and 3-4 proverbs by Confucius. Copy these proverbs and explain each.
12. Diary/Journal entry: you are a worker, warrior, or slave working on the Great Wall (200 words)
13. Research more about the Terra-cotta Army of Shi Huangdi. Create a museum exhibit that provides
information about the origins and history of the terra-cotta army and the tomb of Shi Huangdi. Use images,
illustrations, and written information to make an interesting exhibit. Make some small figurines to represent the
terra-cotta army.
14. Write a eulogy of Shi Huangdi. Talk about the pros and cons about his rule. What were his contributions?
At a funeral, friends, family, advisors will be in attendance. (~200 words to 1-page)
15. Write an imaginary résumé for someone looking for a job in the Han government. Provide details in the
résumé: person’s education, family connections, other qualifications.
16. Research what life was like for families during the Han dynasty. Family duties, roles of fathers, wives, and
children. Create a graphic organizer to demonstrate your research.
17. Research Fu and Shi poems. Create a scroll to copy and illustrate the poems. Explain what the poems
mean. Han paintings often depicted realistic scenes from everyday life.
17a. Re-read the story on pages 206-207. Illustrate the story by creating a 8-10 cartoon panel. Write in
dialogue using bubbles.

18. Create a chart with 3 columns labeled: Farming and Manufacturing, Trade Routes, Buddhism Comes to
China. Complete the chart with details.
19. Create an ad for products a Chinese trader might try to sell to another country, including how the products
will be sent to the buyer and how long it will take for the products to reach the buyer.
20. Review the advances in farming and manufacturing made in Han China. Explain how each advance helped
the Chinese economy. Research the iron plow, the wheelbarrow, silk production. How did it aid the Chinese,
how it worked, and how that item is used today, if at all.
21. Sketch or re-create the Silk Route (page 210). List the geographical features. Write a letter to a new
caravan guide who is going to travel the Silk Road. In your letter, explain the difficulties of the route, what
problems lie ahead, where water can be found, and the length of the journey from Chang’an to Tyre.
22. Decide whether you will be a Roman or Chinese trader. What items do you want to trade on the
Silk Road? Decide the prices of your wares. Create a flowchart showing where the merchandise is sold to the
next trader and how much that trader pays for it. The goods may change hands several times as they make their
way along the Silk Road, and time the price is raised slightly higher. Calculate how much of the final price had
been added along the way to the manufacturer’s price. How much profit did each trader make at each point?
23. Create a collage of the Silk Road. Places, East to West Goods, West to East Goods. Maps, roads,
important cities (reference our OCR book), physical features, images of people who traveled the route, animals
people used to carry the cargo, create or find images of goods that were traded along the route.
24. Project: China Invention. Recreate an ancient China Invention. See handout.
25. Make a collage of as many 20th and 21st century inventions.
