Venetia Bourrier In 1990 Venetia became the Director of Pharmacy at the Manitoba Cancer Treatment & Research Foundation, now known as CancerCare Manitoba (CCMB). Over the next 20 years, Venetia developed a comprehensive oncology pharmacy program at CCMB. Major accomplishments include establishment of a chemotherapy ordering process, investigational drug service, a Regional Oncology Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee, an intravenous admixture pharmacy service, an ambulatory infusion pump program and electronic prescribing. Intravenous (IV) chemotherapy has always been a high risk intervention of patients. Adverse events, including the death of a patient due to fluorouracil overdose, have highlighted the safety risk inherent with this drug therapy. Since 2007, Venetia has been very involved in patient safety efforts at both the provincial and national level in several initiatives aimed at improving the practice of all healthcare providers to minimize risk to patients. Venetia is the Interim Director of the Quality, Patient Safety and Risk program at CCMB where she practices each and every day to effect changes to support increased safety for oncology patients. Venetia is a very deserving recipient of this first ever Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association Patient Safety Award.
