In this set of material, the reading passage describes the history of using garlic, and
the listening passage gives some scientific evidence to support the information
presented in the reading passage.
The reading passage shows that garlic was used as medicine in Ancient Egypt.
During that time, there were many slaves working in Egypt and the Egyptians
believed that if they could keep the slaves healthy, the slaves would keep working.
After that, garlic was used by the Greeks and Romans. Despite using garlic as
medicine, they thought garlic had magical power, so they let their soldiers take it to
increase their courage. Later, people used garlic in various ways until now.
In the listening passage, the professor gives some scientific proof to support the
information presented in the reading passage. Why was garlic used for such a long
time? It was not only because of superstitious reasons but also because raw garlic
could kill 23 kinds of bacteria. Furthermore, heated garlic can reduce blood pressure,
which may have some impact on preventing heart attacks and strokes.
