Observing Mitosis Lab
Purpose: To observe the stages of cell reproduction under
the microscope.
Procedures:
1. Observe the slide of the onion root tip and the
Whitefish blastula (one at a time).
2. Magnify until you can see single cells and the
Chromosomes inside of each cell.
3. Make drawings (make sure it is labeled with
Magnification, identify the object, and
Should look just like you see it!) of cells
That are undergoing different stages of mitosis.
Also, label the drawing with the stage of mitosis
The cell is in.
*There should be 6 drawings per slide, one
for each stage of the cell cycle:
Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase,
Telophase,and Cytokinesis
Example of lab drawing:
Questions (Write questions & answers):
1. What is mitosis?
2. Why did we use a slide of the root tip of an onion rather
Than a leaf or the stem?
3. While observing a slide, count the number of cells
Within your view that are in each stage of the
Cell cycle. Make a data table to record your
Observations:
Stage
Number of Cells
% of Cells**
Interphase
Prophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase
Cytokinesis
** To calculate the percent of cells, divide the number of
cells for the individual stage by the TOTAL number
of cells you counted (all stages together) and multiply
this number by 100.
