Map Skills and Five Themes of Geography Study Guide Key
You should use this study guide as well as notes from class to help you prepare for the
quiz. Spend some time studying over the weekend (half an hour each day) and you will do just
fine!
1. What are the five themes of geography?
LOCATION
PLACE
HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION
MOVEMENT
REGIONS
2. What is the definition of absolute location?
It is a “Geographic Address” – the exact location of a place found by LATITUDE and
LONGITUDE coordinates or by a NUMERICAL ADDRESS.
3. What is the definition of relative location?
A relative location describes a location using PLACES around it. It can involve describing
a location using other landmarks, directions, or distances.
4. What is the definition of a physical characteristic of a place?
Physical characteristics are characteristics that are NATURALLY OCCURRING. This
can include climate, landforms (mountains, plateaus, plains), bodies of water, and
elevation.
5. What is the definition of a human characteristic of a place?
Human characteristics are NOT “naturally occurring.” Rather, they come from the ideas
and actions of people and result in changes to the environment. They are characteristics
built to help accommodate the LIFESTYLE of the people. Examples include buildings,
bridges, and schools.
6. What is the definition of human-environment interaction? How can it happen (3 ways)?
a. Humans ADAPT to the environment by wearing clothes that are suitable to the
environment, for example.
b. Humans MODIFY the environment by heating and cooling buildings based on the
desired climate, for example.
c. Humans DEPEND on the environment for food, water, or transportation, for example.
7. What is the definition of movement? What are the three main types of movement?
Movement is the movement of PEOPLE, GOODS, and IDEAS from one place to another.
8. What is the definition of a region?
A region is the basic unit of study in GEOGRAPHY. A region is an area that displays
UNIFYING characteristics.
9. What are some examples of unifying characteristics?
GOVERNMENT, RELIGION, CULTURE, LANGUAGE, PHYSICAL FEATURES, CLIMATE
10. What do coordinates of longitude and latitude tell us?
Latitude and longitude coordinates tell us the ABSOLUTE LOCATION of a place.
11. Which way do lines of latitude run?
Lines of latitude run EAST to WEST, but they tell you how far NORTH or SOUTH you
are from the Equator.
12. Which ways do lines of longitude run?
Lines of latitude run NORTH to SOUTH, but they tell you how far EAST or WEST you
are from the Prime Meridian.
13. What is another name for a line of longitude?
MERIDIAN
14. What is the starting point for measuring lines of latitude?
The EQUATOR
15. What is the starting point for measuring lines of longitude?
The PRIME MERIDIAN
16. What are the 2 areas located above and below the equator called?
The NORTHERN and SOUTHERN Hemispheres
17. What are the 2 areas located to the right and left of the prime meridian called?
The WESTERN and EASTERN Hemispheres.
18. How far do the northern and southern hemispheres extend in their respective directions?
90 degrees
19. How far do the eastern and western hemispheres extend in their respective directions?
180 degrees
20. In which hemispheres do we live?
The NORTHERN and WESTERN Hemispheres
