• orthographic patterns (for example, qu, consonant doubling, changing the ending of a word
from -y to -ies when forming the plural), and common homonyms

Procedures:
1. Spelling pre-test
2. Teacher will have students put the words in ABC order.
3. Students will cheer the word wall words.
4. Cursive handwriting practice: Students will do pages 89-90. —Please remind students of
spacing, legibility and sizing.
5. Students will do a word wall activity by using writing clues to write each word. After
students write the words, they will check their papers by chanting the letters in the
words aloud and underlining each letter as they say it. (See page 126 green Month by
Month book).
6. The teacher will play “The Wheel” with students using all the word wall words. It is like
hangman, and the game focuses student attention on all the letters and positions of the
word wall words. See page 127 for more details and an example to go by.
Homework: Write each word 5 times each in ABC order.

Procedures:
1. Review Spelling homework.
2. Cursive handwriting practice: Students will do pages 91-92. —Please remind students of
spacing, legibility and sizing.
3. The teacher will do “Making Words” with the students. The secret word is Oldsmobile.
The letters for the baggies are e, i, o, o, b, d, l, l, m, s. See page 133 in the green book
for words to make.
4. The teacher will give students 5 minutes to play around with the letters to see how many
words they can come up with.
5. The teacher will have the students manipulate the letters to make the words called out.
The teacher will have the students sort the words by related words and rhyming words.
6. Word Wall Activity: Create a Sentence. Put students in pairs. Partners decide on a Word
Wall Word with five (5) to seven (7) letters. Each partner makes a new word with each
letter of the Word Wall Word and creates a sentence using the new words. (Ex. Word
Wall Word “first.” New words are selected to complete the sentence “Freddy is running
straight there.) The partners compare their sentences to see which sentence works best
for the word.
Homework: Write each word in a sentence.

Procedures:
1. Review Spelling homework.
2. Cursive handwriting practice: pages 93-94—Please remind students of spacing, legibility
and sizing.
3. The teacher will do a “Reading/Writing Rhymes” activity with the students.
4. The teacher will focus on the are, air, ear final spelling patterns. (see page 132 for
word lists and pages 50-52 for instructions)

6. Word Wall Activity: Chain a Word. Put students in small groups. The first student in the
group will write any word (ex. “bear”). The next player will write a word that begins with
the last letter of the first word (ex. “bear” “rat”). The next person will begin their word
with the last letter of the second word (ex. “bear” “rat” “there”). The students continue
to write a word until a chain (bearratthere) is formed. Words could be used from special
content areas such as (habitatturtleeggsshelter).
Homework: study words in any way that will help students learn the words

Procedures:
1. Cursive handwriting practice: pages 95-96—Please remind students of spacing, legibility
and sizing.
2. The teacher will lead students in a review game for tomorrow’s test. Some options
include: Sparkle, Timer game, Word Race, Around the World, etc.
Homework: practice test MBS; test tomorrow
Assessment: handwriting practice; group discussion; teacher observation
Procedures:
1. Review spelling words.
2. Students will take the spelling test.
3. Students will write the dictation sentences read aloud by the teacher.
Assessment: Spelling post-test
