Brain Storming
The characters Odysseus from the Odyssey
and Forrest from Forrest Gump are very
similar.
Similarities
 Both have strong physical abilities
(Odysseus: strength Forrest: speed)
 Both fought in wars as soldiers
 Both are wealthy (Odysseus: King of
Ithaca Forrest: millionaire)
 Both travel to many different locations
 Both of their “journeys” take 20 +
years to complete
 Both long to return to their “home”
(Odysseus: Ithaca Forrest: Jenny)
 Both have one true love, even though
they are both tempted away from that
love.
 Both are only children, they have close
relationships with their moms, and both
of their mothers die during their story
 Both have to deal with suitors who
abuse their “home”
Differences
 Odysseus is known for his logic. He is a
great deceiver. Forrest does not have
normal intelligence; however he displays
great compassion and kindness.
 Odysseus’ story reflects Ancient Greek
culture, while Forrest’s story is very
American.

American epic.
Epic: a long narrative poem about important
events in the history of a nation or culture.
 Forrest is an epic hero
He is human
He is flawed
He is brave, loyal, respectful,
reliable, and generous.
He stands up for the weak and does
the right thing.
 Forrest Gump reflects American culture
Some of the references to American
history include: Elvis, the Vietnam
War, presidential assassinations,
Civil rights, drug use, HIV
Forrest represents the American
archetypes. He is an athlete, a
soldier, a business success, husband
and father.
 Forrest Gump is a long narrative that
spans through time and many
landscapes.
