Play Dough Mitosis
Purpose: We will be using play dough and other props to model the cell
reproduction process (6 steps of the cell cycle).
Materials:
1 Paper Plate2 Colors of Play Dough 2 Long red pieces of yarn 10 Short Black pieces of yarn 8 Beads4 Paper Clips -
Cytoplasm
Chromosomes (each color will represent a
different chromosome) DO NOT MIX COLORS
Nuclear Membrane and Cell Membrane
Spindles
Centromeres
Centrioles
Pre-Lab Questions (10 pts): Use your notes and drawings to help you with the pre-lab
questions.
1. List the 6 steps of the Cell Cycle in order. Underline the parts involved in Mitosis.
2. What occurs during the three parts of interphase?
G1 –
S–
G2 –
3. What appears in prophase? What disappears in prophase?
4. What is happening to the chromosomes in metaphase?
5. What happens to the chromosomes in anaphase
(use words centromere and sister chromatids)?
6. Telophase is the end of mitosis. What has appeared? What has disappeared?
7. What is the final stage of the Cell Cycle?
Play Dough Mitosis (30 pts.): Use your pre-lab answers to help you construct
each phase of mitosis. Have the teacher sticker/stamp your paper once
each phase has been created then draw your cell in the spaces below.
Interphase
Cytokinesis
What would we do to our plate if we
wanted to model cytokinesis?
Prophase
Telophase
Metaphase
Anaphase
Conclusion: Answer the following questions complete sentences.
1. Why do you think it is necessary for chromatin to compact itself, coil around
proteins, and form chromosomes?
2. What is the main purpose of the cell cycle?
3. Fill in the following with one of the steps of the cell cycle.
a. 90% of a cells life is spent in this phase ________________________
b. The chromosomes uncoil and the spindle disappears _________________
c. Chromosomes lineup in the middle of the cell ______________________
d. Chromosomes become visible _________________________________
e. The part of interphase in which the DNA is replicated.
