Albert and Oberon clown around at the Botanics
The magic of Shakepeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream interweaves with the thrill
of the circus, as Oberon mounts his unicycle and tells a tale of supernatural
splendour in Albert & Friends Instant Circus’ latest adventure at the Royal Botanic
Garden Edinburgh. From August 21 to August 30, the UK’s largest children’s circus
theatre troupe celebrates its 21st anniversary – and a decade of Fringe presentations
- with free theatrical performances, workshops and general clowning around, from
the natural auditorium near the Garden’s West Gate.
Don’t book a seat, or pay at the box office, just turn up and enjoy the theatrical antics
of Bottom and co in the stunning surroundings of the “Botanics”. Daily performances
of the Alternative Midsummer Night’s Dream, at 1.15pm, are followed by some pure
clowning around with Albert and the Lost Cast from 2.30pm. Those who catch the
bug can also take-up the circus challenge every morning at 10.30am – and learn the
tricks from true masters.
“Our Alternative Midsummer Night’s Dream, like Albert and the Lost Cast and the
daily workshops are for families of all ages. We invite them not only to enjoy watching
circus theatre, but to experience the fun of performance for themselves” says Petrea
Ownes, of Albert and Friends. “What’s more, we welcome them into a venue which is
perfect for taking their time to enjoy all on offer”.

EDITOR’S NOTES
From humble beginnings in the parks of West London, in 1983, Albert & Friends
Instant Circus has flourished into the UK’s largest children’s circus theatre troupe and
enjoys an international reputation for highly-skilled entertainment.
This year, Albert brings to Edinburgh a core troupe of 27 performers between the
ages of eight years and 17 years old.
Visitors to the High Street can also enjoy daily performances by Cirque-IT, founded
last year for the production of performances by former Albert & Friends Instant Circus
students aged between 18 years and 25 years old.
