ASSESSMENT BASIS
Basis for assessment of metallic materials
coming into contact with drinking water
Second amendment
The following amendments shall be applied to the notified version
(2013/541/D) published on 2 April 2015 and/or the notified version of the
first amendment (2015/513/D) published on 28 January 2016.
In Chapter I Introduction, the following statement is added in Section 4
after the first sentence:
‘The amendments thus far have resulted in an expansion of the positive list.
These amendments are therefore binding as at 10 April 2017 as well.’
In Chapter IV Structure of the positive list, Paragraphs 2 and 3 are replaced
by the following amendments:
‘The suitability of metallic materials for drinking water shall be specified for
use in the following product groups:
A)
Pipes,
B)
Fittings, pipe connectors, devices and pumps for drinking
water systems,
C)
1. Components in fittings, pipe connectors, devices and pumps
for drinking water systems whose total water-contact surface
area does not exceed 10% of the total water-contact surface
of the component.
2. Fittings, pipe connectors, devices and pumps in the area of
water supply outside of drinking water systems with
generally continuous flow, and
D)
Components in fittings, pipe connectors, devices and pumps in
the area of water supply outside of drinking water systems
(C2) whose total water-contact surface area does not exceed
10% of the total water-contact surface of the component.

The use of pipe materials (A) and materials for product group C2 may be restricted to certain
types of drinking water. Materials in product group A (pipe materials) may also be used for
applications in product groups B, C and D. Materials for product groups B and C1 must exhibit
general suitability for drinking water and shall be assessed accordingly by the Federal
Environment Agency. This means that they are usable with all drinking water types. Materials for
product group D are not listed explicitly, but rather must meet specific chemical composition
requirements.’
In the Annex, the following materials are added in Category 2.1:

m/s.
In order to form a protective coating, the water must also meet the following conditions:

In the Annex, the following two materials groups are added:
‘3 Coating
3.1 Electroplating of the outer surface for optical reasons
Components made from CW617N or CW612N (as per 2.6.3.1) can be electroplated with a
copper-tin layer composition.
Restrictions:

Base material for the component to be electroplated: CW617N or CW612N (as per
2.6.3.1)

Coating layer composition: 1.) Cu 2.) Sn

Coating production method: electroplating

Anode purity: ≥ 99.90%
Additional requirement:
It must be demonstrated for the production process in question that the finished products are
not contaminated with organic substances added to the electroplating bath. This can be
demonstrated with a migration test as per DIN EN 12873-1.
The proof can be provided within the framework of a permit or certification procedure. In a
procedure of this kind, testing of the metal discharge is not required. In addition, a quality
control system for the production process is required.’

‘4 Passive materials and copper alloys for product
group D
In addition to the materials in product groups A, B and C, additional passive metal materials
and copper alloys can be used for components in product group D.
The copper alloys must meet the following requirements:






Cu, Zn, Si, Sn, P: no restrictions
Al, Fe, Mn: max. 3.0% (m/m)
Pb: max. 3.5% (m/m)
Ni: max. 3.0% (m/m)
As, Sb: max: 0.25% (m/m)
All other elements: max. 0.1% (m/m)’
