Morning Paper
India (2003)
Total Marks 100
NB : (1) All Questions are Compulsary
(2) All Questions carry equal marks
(3) Neatness in handwriting and clarity in expression carries weightage
(4) Illustration of an Answer with clear sketches / diagrams carries weightage.

Two halves of a round homogenous cylinder are held together by a thread wrapped round the
cylinder with two weights each equal to P attached to its ends as shown in the figure.
The complete cylinder weights W Kgf . The plane of contacts of both the halves is vertical
.Determine the minimum value of P , for which both halves of the cylinder will be in equilibrium
on a horizontal plane.

An electric light fixture weighing 15Newtons hangs from a point A , by two strings AB and AC .
The string AC is inclined at 60o to the horizontal and AB at 45o to the vertical as shown in the
figure. Using Lami’s theorem or otherwise determine the forces in the string AC and AB.

Show the minimum force, which will keep the body in equilibrium when it is at the point of
sliding downwards on a inclined plane .
W Sin (α – φ )
Cos φ
Where W = wt of the body
.
α = angle which the inclined plane makes with the body.
μ = coeff of friction
φ = angle of friction such that μ = tan φ

A screw jack has a thread of 10mm pitch .What effort applied at the end of a handle 400mm long
will be required to lift a load of 2 KN if the efficiency at this load is 45% .
6.
A car A had a start with an acceleration of 2m /sec2. Another car B followed after 5 seconds and
continued to chase the car A with uniform velocity of 20 m/sec . Find the time taken ,in which the
car B will overtake the car A.
7.
A train of weight 100 tonnes is pulled by an engine on a level track at a constant speed of 45 kph.
The resistance due to friction is 1 % of the train weight. Find the power of the engine .
8.
Two blocks as shown in figure have masses A = 20kg B = 10kg and the coeff of friction between
the block A and the horizontal plane μ = 0.25 .If the system is released from rest and the block B
falls through a vertical distance of 1m ,what is the velocity attained by it ,if the effect of friction
in the pulley and extension in the string is negligible.

A trapezoidal plate , having its parallel sides 4 meters and 2 meters at a distance of 2 meters
apart is immersed vertically in water with the 4-meter side uppermost ( Horizontal ). At a depth 2
meters below the water surface, find the total thrust on the surface.
