more advanced than English courses taken previously.
Works studied may include
Romeo and Juliet
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Of Mice and Men
The House on Mango Street
The Learning Tree
The Little Prince
Frankenstein
The Devil’s Arithmetic
There will be films shown along with some of the texts in order to provide a better
understanding of the concepts along with comparisons from text to film.
The course earns five credits and there will be a final exam.
Grading policy: All work will be based on points.
Tests/Essays
100 pts.
Quizzes
20- 100 pts.
Projects, writing assignments
100 pts.
Homework/Class work
10 pts.
Journals
50 pts. (per semester)
To ascertain your grade add the total number of points you earn and divide it by the total
amount of points that could have been earned. For example, if you earn 280 pts. out of 325
pts., your grade will be 86%.
Tests will be announced and a review will be given. Quizzes will be announced. Readings,
particularly reading done at home, will be quizzed either in written or oral format. There may
be on-line work and quizzes which will be announced.
Projects: there will be enough time allotted to complete any assigned project. If late, 50% of
the project must be done and shown for extra time to be awarded. If it is late after extended
time, you will lose 5 pts. each day.
You will need the following for each class: marble notebook, binder with paper and
dividers, pen or pencil, index cards, book/work we are reading at the time.
In addition to the readings, there will be a writing component (critical thinking pieces,
literary essays, personal essays, creative writing), grammar and usage, vocabulary, and test
taking development and preparation.
Check School Wires for important information regarding class assignments, notes, due dates
and other pertinent information.
