LESSON 7.2.08 The Prophet Muhammad Learning objectives Students will Trace the origins of Islam and the life and teachings of Muhammad, including it relationship to Judaism and Christianity. Recognize the importance of the Arabic language and Islamic religion in unifying the diverse groups of this region. Summarize the spread of Islam from Muhammad’s lifetime to the mid 700s C.E. Identify and understand that Arabic is written from right to left (cultural competence) Recognize that Arabic is written from right to left, and that world languages have a variety of orientations. Lesson questions How did Islam originate? How did Muhammad’s ideas challenge the status quo in Makkah? How did the Arabic language and Islamic religion unify the Arabian Peninsula? Lesson vocabulary Islam prophet Muslims caliph Learning activities/strategies In this lesson, students learn about the life of Muhammad and the rise and expansion of Muslim rule. In a Writing for Understanding activity, students first listen to a recording that dramatically tells the story of Muhammad’s life. They then progress through 4 stations to identify and practice Arabic writing that relates to different times in Muhammad’s life. They then create an illustrated manuscript that retells the story in their own words.
