What caused the end of the Roman empire
Growing power of the elites

What led to the deaths of Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus?
They urged the council of the plebs to pass land-reform bills and this angered senators so
they had the brothers killed.
What happened in Rome as a result of Sulla’s legacy?
His success at using the army to seize power may lead others to attempt the same
resulting in more instability
What impact did the Battle of Actium have on the Roman Republic?
Octavian gained control and it soon became the Roman Empire
Who was involved in the First Triumvirate
Crassus, Pompey, Julius Caesar
Crassus dies and Caesar and Pompey vie for control. Senate backs Pompey and asks
Caesar to lay down his command. Caesar invades by illegally crossing the Rubicon and
starts a civil war in which Pompey was defeated. Caesar is made dictator and passes land
reforms, builds, and military conquests, but is assassinated by a group of leading
senators.
Second Triumvirate
Octavia, Anthony, Lepidus
Lepidus fades away and it is between Octavia and Anthony. Anthony is allied with
Cleopatra of Egypt. Battle of Actium Octavia smashed the army and navy of Anthony
and Cleopatra and becomes the sole ruler and calls himself Augustus

After Augustus Roman rulers grew more powerful and corrupt

Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antonius Pius, and Marcus Aurelius
Treated the ruling classes with espect, ended arbitary executions, maintained peace in the
empire, supported domestic policies generally helpful to the empire, and adopted capable
men as their successors

Students in groups of 4 make two lists on butcher paper entitled then and now comparing
education in Roman times and present day. The should compare using the following
categories: Who was responsible for the children’s education, disciplinary measures,
subjects taught, teaching and learning methods, end of childhood for males and females,
and at least one category of the groups choice. How has education changed since roman
times? Are there any aspects of education in Roman times that you think would work
today.
