FCS MINOR S COURSE SYLLABUS 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR The following list includes major topics of study and major assignments and activities for each area of study. HUMAN DEVELOPMENT/GERONTOLOGY Human Development involves the study of growth and development from infancy through the changes that take place in the elderly. You will take on the role as a preschool teacher for the Child Development portion of the unit. Topics to be covered: Activities/Assignments: Developmental skills and stages of development Nutrition and the young child Snacks for young children Importance of early learning Develop empathy towards the elderly Understanding the elderly Preschool Unit Portfolio healthy snack preparation writing a children’s book simulation lab Interview of senior citizen The preschool unit portfolio as well as the interview of a senior citizen will be the primary assessments in this area. FOODS AND NUTRITION Foods and nutrition involves the study of nutrition and healthy eating habits and the preparation of foods. Students will be actively involved in demonstrations, preparation and clean up of each lab. Topics to be covered: Activities/Assignments____ Food safety and sanitation Understanding recipes and measuring Safe use of knives in food preparation Time management principles Pastry preparation Protein preparation Lab Lab Lab Lab A unit test will be used as the final assessment for this unit. SEWING/TEXTILES Sewing and textiles involves both the use of the sewing machine as well as hand sewing techniques and the use of the embroidery machine. Students will select a project to complete during the marking period. Topics to be covered: Activities/Assignments: Safe use of the sewing machine Pattern usage Cutting/pinning Machine sewing Haan kit project A unit test and completion of the Haan kit project will be the major assessments for this unit. Students will be expected to pay for their selected project. CONSUMER EDUCATION UNIT The consumer unit involves an understanding of an individual’s rights and responsibilities as a consumer. Topics to be covered: Activities/Assignments: Budget development create budget according to assigned occupation researching banks online Checking/savings accounts Credit cards Renting an apartment Purchasing an automobile find appropriate housing to meet your budget webquest A culminating portfolio consisting of documents completed during this unit will serve as the assessment.
