2006-2007 ECONOMICS (BA/BS) Methods of Assessment and Criteria for Success Intended Program Outcomes Direct Measures Indirect Measures 1. Critical Thinking Skills Demonstrate ability to distinguish between macro- and micro-economic issues. Identify and apply economizing problems issues in real-life through cost-benefit analysis. Demonstrate ability to collect data and construct and estimate economic models. For instance, forecasting economic trends using econometric models. Sixty-nine percent (69%) of the students (seniors) passed the above capstone courses (ECP 4703; ECO 4223; and ECO 4713) with grade of “C” or better. Sixty percent (60%) of the seniors surveyed indicated that they are satisfied with the projects and instruction in the capstone courses. This is below the expected seventyfive percent (75%) target range. 2. Content Knowledge: Analyze the concepts of scarcity, choice, and opportunity cost; distinguish between classical and Keynesian employment theories; and distinguish between the concepts of demand and supply related to product, resource, and money markets. Demonstrate the ability to write a clear and concise essay on economic issues that develops a consistent argument and evidence to support interpretation of economic situations. Test students in essay and multiple choice exam. Seventy-five percent (75%) of students taking Principles of Economics I and II will pass with grade of “C” or better. Sixty-nine percent (69%) of the students who took ECO 2013 and ECO 2023 earned a grade of “C” or better. Sixty-one percent (61%) of the students passed ECO 3421 with grade “C” or better. About seventy-five percent (75%) of Economics graduates will rank Principles of Economics I and II favorable in exit survey: “How did ECO 2013 and ECO 2023 provide a foundation for your success in upper-level economics courses?” In exit survey, seventy-five percent (75%) of the graduating seniors will rank instruction in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics favorable by responding to the following question: “Please rate the level of satisfaction with the instruction in ECO 3421 and ECO 4401. Eighty-eight percent (88%) of the Economics seniors who took ECO 2013 and ECO 2023 indicated that they are satisfied with the latter Students (seniors) are expected to complete research paper and essay exams graded on content and style in the following capstone courses: ECP 4703: Managerial Economics, ECO 4223: Money and Banking, and ECO 4713: International Finance. More than eighty-percent (80%) of seniors who complete these projects will rate them satisfactory by responding to the following survey question: “Please rate the level of satisfaction with the knowledge gained through instruction in writing research projects in the capstone courses --- ECP 4703; ECO 4713; and ECO 4223”. courses. Professional Development: Summarize internship experience by preparing Internship Report that focuses on role and experience gained from various internship set-ups. More than ninety percent (90%) of interns will successfully complete their Internship and Internship Reports at the end of the internship. Ninety percent (90%) of graduates will earn grade “B” or better in ECO 3921: Professional Development. The target (of above ninety-percent (90%)) success rate was achieved (93%)in ECO 4943: Internship Economics. However, seventy-five percent (75%) of the students passed ECO 3921 with a grade "B" or better. More than ninety-percent (90%) of the interns will receive satisfactory (or higher) evaluation by their supervisors. More than eighty percent (80%) of the interns will rank their internship experience satisfactory in exit survey. Exit survey will indicate that more than eighty percent (80%) of graduating students responded that they were extremely satisfied with the knowledge gained from ECO 3921: Professional Development by responding to the following survey question: “Please rate the level of satisfaction with the materials covered in and knowledge gained by taking ECO 3921: Professional Development”. 4. Communication Skill(s) Graduates will demonstrate proficiency in their ability to present an oral and written presentation in the capstone courses, which include ECP 4703: Managerial Economics, ECO 4713: International Finance, and ECO 4223: Money and Banking. Research and execute a complex economic concept effectively through written research reports. More than seventy-five percent (75%) of seniors will earn passing grade (“C” or better) in their oral and written presentations and projects in the capstone courses (ECP 4703; ECO 4713 and ECO 4223). Sixty-nine percent (69%) of Economics majors passed the capstone courses by writing the projects, writing the essay exams in these courses, and making oral One hundred percent (100%) of the interns received satisfactory (or higher) evaluation by their supervisors. On the other hand, fifty-six percent (56%) of the interns ranked their internship experience satisfactory in exit survey. This is below the eighty percent (80%) target. Eighty-one percent (81%) of graduating seniors rated the materials covered in and knowledge gained by taking ECO 3921: Professional Development satisfactory. This is a little above the target of eighty percent (80%). More than ninety-percent (90%) of the Internship Supervisors will rank interns above average or excellent in their evaluation of the interns’ written and oral performance on the job. Students’ effectiveness will be measured by faculty members rating presentations using the oral and written communication skills. Assessment of students will be based on criteria prepared by faculty and Internship Supervisors, presentations. 5. Interdisciplinary Perspective: Demonstrate ability to Prepare Technical Research Reports that focus on multidisciplinary areas. The research reports will be expected to be of publishable standard. Summarize team-work experience gained during the internship period. Understand the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation and issues in business environment. Eighty percent (80%) of interns will earn grade “B” or better in ECO 4943: Internship Economics. Eighty percent (80%) of students will earn grade “C” or better in ECO 3921: Professional Development. The target outcome of eighty percent (80%) pass rate was achieved in ECO 4943. The actual performance is eighty-six percent (86%). The target outcome of eighty percent (80%) pass rate of "C" or better was achieved in ECO 3921. Actually, eightyeight percent (88%) of students passed with grade "C" or better. respectively. One-hundred percent (100%) of the internship supervisors ranked the interns above average or excellent in their evaluation of the interns’ written and oral performance on the job. Furthermore, one-hundred percent (100%) of the students were rated effective in their oral and written communication skills by their internship supervisors. Exit survey will indicate that more than eightypercent (80%) of graduating students responded that they were extremely satisfied with interdisciplinary knowledge gained from their internship experience by responding to the following survey item: “Please rate your level of satisfaction with your internship experience in terms of interdisciplinary knowledge”. Fifty-six percent (56%) of the graduating seniors rated their internship experience, in terms of interdisciplinary knowledge, satisfactory. This is below the eighty-percent (80%) target.
