Signal Program – July to December 2015
Signal is a creative arts studio for young people 13 to 25. At Signal
young people work alongside professional
artists in a collaborative way. Located in the heart of the city, Signal is a place for making, showing, inspiring
and developing Melbourne’s creative young talent – in every medium.
July
Media arts
Public Disturbance
Signal Media Artists Club is kicking off regular monthly meets with a four-day intensive of moving sculpture
mayhem. Using microcontrollers, wireless technology and your creative imagination, you will breathe life into
an inanimate object and perform it remotely in the public arena.
Working in an open lab environment with access to a variety of tools and materials, Cake Industries will help
you realise your vision.
Dates and times: Winter school holidays from Tuesday 30 June through to Friday 3 July, 11am to 4pm each
day.

Screen printing / lino cut / woodblock printing
Print Studio
Join artist and printmaker Joel Gailer this July for an introduction to traditional printmaking and alternative
practice.
You will be introduced to a new printing technique each session including operating a print press, wood block
printing, screen printing and lino-cut.
Explore DIY techniques to continue your printmaking practice outside the studio using recycled materials.
Dates and times: Saturday 4 July, Saturday 11 July, Saturday 18 July and Sunday 26 July, 11am to 4pm
each day.
August
Signal Screen
Ngangu biik: Hear, Understand Country
Ngangu biik is an audio-visual project that follows the journey of Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Diane Kerr as she
connects to country and her language woi wurrung.
Ngangu biik will be presented on the Signal Screen from August 14 through August 22 in celebration of
Wurundjeri week.
Screenings commence after dark.
Film
Nomadic Cinematic / The Diaspora
Nomadic Cinematic is a monthly film series presented in collaboration with Still Nomads. Each month guest
artists will curate a film & discussion session to inspire dialogue and creativity around the African Australian
Diaspora experience.
The film series will kick off by looking at the global African Diaspora and the role of African-Australians in
shaping this culture.
Dates and times: Sunday 9 August, 4pm to 7pm.
Melbourne Writers Festival
Signal in partnership with Melbourne Writers Festival presents an exciting weekend dedicated to
young writers.
Zine making with Brodie Lancaster and Cameron Baker
Join two of Australia’s most passionate zine-makers, Brodie Lancaster and Cameron Baker. Discover how and
why they make their popular zines, then get hands-on and create your own.
Dates and times: Saturday 22 August, 11:30pm to 2:30pm.
Selfie Stories with Natalie Tran and Minna Gilligan
Want to learn all the tips and tricks to expressing yourself, your art or your stories through Instagram, Tumblr,
YouTube and more? Join bloggers Natalie Tran (Community Channel) and Minna Gilligan (Rookie magazine)
for this fun workshop where you’ll be selfie styling with the best!
Dates and times: Saturday 22 August, 3pm to 5pm.
Fan Fictions with Danielle Binks, Melissa Keil and Justine Larbalestier
Are you a fan-fiction fanatic? Young Adult authors and book bloggers Justine Larbalestier, Melissa Keil and
Danielle Binks reveal their favourite fan-fiction pieces, then open up the floor for you to share and discuss all
things fan-fiction. Be sure to bring along a piece of fan fiction to share – something you wrote or just
something you love.
Hosted by fan fic aficionado Amie Kaufman.
Dates and times: Sunday 23 August, 1pm to 2:30pm.
YA Book Swap
A fast and furious event for Young Adult book lovers! Join
us for an awesome, high-energy book swap where
you get to leave with a brand-new-to-you book. Bring along a book you’ve enjoyed that you’re prepared to part
with, and swap it for a new one you haven’t read.
Dates and time: Sunday 23 August, 3pm to 3:30pm. All workshops and events take place at Signal.
Street Art Mentoring
Signal’s street art mentoring workshops offer a unique opportunity to work alongside professional artists in a
safe, collaborative space.
Workshops take place in Melbourne’s laneways and explore paste-ups, free hand techniques, stencil,
installation and murals led by Melbourne’s leading artists from the Blender Studios.
Dates and times: Saturday 29 August and Sunday 30 August, 11am to 4pm each day.
September
Live electronic music
Perform Your Own Groove
Perform Your Own Groove is a series of live electronic music sessions facilitated by music producers and
performers Moses Iten (Cumbia Cosmonauts) and Bryan Phillips (Galambo).
Develop the creative process of live music performance and experiment with a variety of techniques and styles
to discover the performer in you.
Sessions culminate in a live electronic music gig on the Signal sound walk.
Workshops: Saturdays in September commencing 5 September through to 26 September, 11am to 4pm
each day.
Live Performance: Saturday 10 October from 4pm to 6pm.
Visual art
Evolution
Evolution is a creative arts program dedicated to young people who are not currently studying or employed.
Working alongside professional artists and youth workers you will be exposed to a wide range of art forms
including visual art, design, film, animation and photography.
Evolution is open to young people from all walks of life and artistic ability.
Dates and times: Workshops take place Tuesdays and Wednesdays for eight weeks kicking off 8 September.
Applications are by referral. To make a referral contact Frontyard on 03 9614 3688.
Evolution is a partnership between Signal and Frontyard Youth Services.
Film
Nomadic Cinematic / The Romantics
Nomadic Cinematic is a monthly film series presented in collaboration with Still Nomads. This month’s film
session will look to love in all its manifestations, colours and experiences.
Dates and times: Sunday 9 September, 4pm to 7pm.
Krump / dance / photography / film
The Art of Buck
Come and get buck with some of Australia’s best Krump dancers these September school holidays. The Art of
Buck is celebrating 10 years of Krump in Australia through a series of workshops and live events at Signal.
Documentary workshops
Media artist Rachel Main will take you through an engaging and dynamic workshop series focused on the
foundations of documentary photography and filmmaking. You will then document the Krump workshops and
have your works exhibited as part of The Art of Buck event at Signal.
Dates and times: Tuesday 22 September and Wednesday 23 September, 11am to 4pm each day.
Krump Workshops
In these high-energy dance workshops you will learn the foundations of Krump, develop a Krump character,
master a Krumpography and perform at an International Krump event.
Dates and times: Thursday 24 September, Friday 25 September, Tuesday 29 September, Wednesday 30
September and Thursday 1 October, 11am to 4pm each day.
The Art of Buck Event & Screening
The Melbourne Krump community will be hosting The Art of Buck Krump event featuring battles, live
performances and screenings on Les Erdi Plaza at Signal.
Dates and time: Saturday 17 October, 3pm to 5pm.
Visual art
Mapping with Miso
Melbourne artist Miso creates delicate works made with fine pinpricks on translucent paper. Each work reflects
her personal experience, maps, stories and memories of the places she has passed through.
Over three workshops at Signal you will work in an intimate environment with the artist to create your own
personal maps. Using delicate pinpricks you will collage your own memories and experiences to create a
collaborative installation to be presented in the Signal gallery.
Workshops: Saturday 12 September, Saturday 19 September and Saturday 26 September, 11am to 4pm
each day.
Mapping with Miso is open to young people 16 to 25 years.
October
Sculpting / mould making / resin casting
Resin as Form
Join artist Kate Rohde to translate ideas into three-dimensional forms.
Learn how to model and sculpt in plasticine for mould making and resin casting. Experiment with hand
modeling to realise a three dimensional sculpture. Make your own mould that can be used again and again,
then play around with vivid colours and finishes in repeat variations. Your sculpture works will form part of a
public installation at M Pavilion in the summer.
Dates and times: Saturday 17 October and Sunday 18 October, 11am to 4pm each day.

Nomadic Cinematic / The Feminists
Nomadic Cinematic is a monthly film series presented in collaboration with Still Nomads.
This month’s film and discussion session is all about African feminism and its role in the African Australian
Diaspora and beyond.
Dates and time: Sunday 25 October, 4pm to 7pm.
November
Illustration / comics / publishing / public art
Radical Futures: Down the Line
Working with artists Sam Wallman, Merv Heers and Michael Fikaris you will develop a series of cartoons and
comics exploring radical futures. Produce creative and bold visions of how the world could turn out down the
line. Works will be published into an anthology and then translated into a public mural.
Illustration workshops: Saturdays in November commencing 7 November through to 28 November, 11am to
4pm each day.
Mural workshops: Saturday 5 December and Sunday 6 December, 11am to 4pm each day.
Film
Nomadic Cinematic / The Artists
Nomadic Cinematic is a monthly film series presented in collaboration with Still Nomads. This month’s film and
discussion session will look at Black and African art and the current Afro Australian art scene.
Dates and times: Sunday 8 November, 4pm to 7pm.
LISTEN / Melbourne Music Week
LISTEN presents a dynamic arts event featuring panel discussions, live performances and projections,
showcasing Melbourne’s most engaging underground female art provocateurs. Featuring Kt spit, Empat Lima,
Repellant and more.
Dates and times: Saturday November 21 from 5pm.
LISTEN exists to spark and cultivate a conversation around women’s experiences in the Australian music
industry. Check out the Signal website for further details.
December
Street Art Mentoring
Signal’s street art mentoring workshops return in November. Workshops take place in Melbourne’s laneways

Nomadic Cinematic is a monthly film series presented in collaboration with Still Nomads.
Tapping into the global Afrofuture movement, the final session looks ahead and imagines what the African
Diaspora looks like in the future.
Dates and times: Sunday 13 December, 4pm to 7pm.

Signal Curators
Signal has young people at heart. Signal Curators is an opportunity for you to tell the story of Signal through
art. Guided by professionals from some of Melbourne’s top galleries, the Signal Curators get a behind-thescenes look into curating The Signal Curators have on-going input into the program, sharing ideas and
realising creative projects.
If you’re interested in becoming a Signal Curator and shaping the future of Signal get in touch.
Signal Curators is open to young people 16 to 25 years.
The Signal Express

The Signal Express1 is an online arts and culture magazine created entirely by young writers. Featuring the
freshest of arts, entertainment and cultural journalism, it’s a place for reviews, previews, features and opinion.
If you want to be part of the conversation, get in touch. We’d love your voice in the mix.
The Signal Express is open to young people 13 to 18 years.
Signal Media Artists Club
Signal Media Artists Club is a monthly meet led by Cake Industries. Working in an open lab environment you
will have access to a variety of tools and materials and explore the many mediums and conceptual possibilities
of art and technology.
Signal Media Artists Club is open to young people aged 13 to 18 years.
