Unit III: Imperialism
Topic: Political Cartoons, Unit Assessment
Background: Political cartoons can communicate editorial commentary or biased propaganda.
In either case, the expression of mass media artists to freely comment on political, economic,
and social events is necessary to the free exchange of ideas in any society that values its
liberty. Sometimes the most powerful commentary is also the simplest, presented in a drawing
that can get its message across more efficiently to a wider audience, in an entertaining way.
Goal: You will be able to demonstrate your knowledge of imperialism by creating an effective
political cartoon.
Your task: Create an original political cartoon that provides historical commentary on
imperialism. Your drawing can address any aspect of imperialism – political, economic, social,
or cultural. You can choose any type of imperialism you prefer, at any historical time & place
that has been studied or discussed in class. Consider the point of view of either the conquered
or the conqueror. In either case, your point of view should be apparent in your representation.
Examples of prior student work is posted on my Teacher Web Page.
It is recommended that you sketch a draft of your idea on a separate piece of paper first.
