something we are really
proud of as a, as a team and
everybody involved in the
project.”

Pans to a group of EVE koala catchers on an identification
program of fauna spot catching. Zooms to a satellite catcher
having a visual of a koala on a tree.
V/o
“…with the fauna spotter
catchers and identifying
where the koalas are within
the clearing zone. This has
been really great we can do
that not only by the GPS
trackers, but we’ve got the
LX collars.”
Scene opens slightly out of focus, capturing a koala with a LX
collar.
V/o
“...that show on a website
where every koala is and
where their movements
have been overnight, so we
can locate each koala …”
Cut to a close up of a hand of a catcher using a mobile
satellite device.

“…what tree they are in, tag
that off and make sure that
the clearing doesn’t go
anywhere near it.”
Cuts into a tree sections on which a koala is hanging on.
V/o
“That’s not only being great
to protect the koalas but it’s
actually helped us with the
clearing program itself, we
haven’t had…”
A group of men working on a clearing site to

been able to move clearing
into other areas…”
Zoom to another construction site, a truck is in motion.’
V/o
“…if it’s full of koalas and
we’ve been able to protect
the fauna while we are
doing it.”
Pans to an EVE researcher as he engages in a the discussion ’
V/o
“Endeavor Veterinary
Ecology has been engaged
to conduct a koala tagging
and monitoring program,
and this program includes
not only habitat that’s in the
rail corridor but also
adjacent to the rail corridor.
And it involves catching all
of the koalas living in that
habitat and conducting a
monitoring program for the
duration of the rail
construction project.“
Zoom to an EVE researcher .
V/o
“And also we have been
engaged to perform a koala
translocation project for the
koalas that are going to be
directly displaced by the
construction activities that
really have no decent
habitat left for them to stay
in.”
Cut to a close scene of the EVE researcher.
V/o
“We’ve got a team of koala
specialist including koala
capture specialist and what
you are about to see is one
of our project koalas being
captured for the koala
tagging and monitoring
program.”
Cut to a thicket and trees, men on orange reflectors on a
tagging and monitoring program. Pans to a man with a
V/o
“The reason why we are
trying to capture this
particular koala is to put a
LX collar tracking system
on him so what that will do
is…”
Zooms to a portable satellite tracker device.’
V/o
“…allow us to track...”
Pans to a man with a tracker.’
V/o
“…that koala remotely
without physically having
to go…”
Zoom to a man with a hat and a tracker showing a descriptive
map of the koala with LX collars zooms to the location.
V/o
“…locate it and visually
site it every single time. So
what it will do, this is a map
of all of the koalas that, that
do have the LX system on
it.”
Zoom to a trackers finding a visual for the koalas pans to the
satellite devise
V/o
“So I will be able to go in
and just bring out any
koalas name, tap on it and it
shows exactly where it,
where it is…”
Cuts to a trees on which a koala is situated, zooms on the
portable satellite devise and pans back to the tracker
V/o
“…its current location
where it’s been, it shows its
tracks exactly where it’s
been and essentially
showing us what area of
habitat it’s using and
potentially any restrictions
that its experiencing.”
Scene pans to the tracker and zooms to the satellite devise of a
mp on koalas.
V/o
“So if you look at this
particular area now we’ve
got six other koalas it’s in a
small, small area, and you
can actually see on that, on
that map the project area
and the cleared area.”
Scenery cuts out to a koala hanging on a tree and pans back to
the tracker.
V/o
“90, 95% of the 200 koalas
that we are tracking….”
Pans to a tracker on a tagging mission, climbing a tree.
V/o
“…already have this system
fitted to them. So we are
going to climb up and
encourage him to come
down where he will jump to
ground and suddenly be
captured by some catchers
on the ground.”
Scene pans to the trees in the environment whilst cuts to the
tracker on tree with a maneuvering pole.
V/o
“A big part of using this
technique is… you’ll notice
I’ve got an open space
behind me that, so this big
long pole doesn’t foul…”
V/o
“…behind me as I am
trying to maneuver him
down. This is a big male
and he’s not too scared of
me I think so, there we go
he’s just decide well I think
I’m going to climb away
from this, I’ve just got to
keep it moving now.” And
Brian is going to pull him
down so figured out a plan.
V/o
“You can see there he tried
to us swerve a bit and as
you get him to the ground
and he’s successful been
captured so he’ll be off to
the vet now. He’ll have his
tag replaced and he’ll be
back out here within hours.
Zooms to the trees pans to the maneuver pole as the koala
climbs down the tree.
‘’
Tracker mumbling as the koala is captured pans to the
trackers and on a cage.
Pans and zooms’ to an EVE researcher
V/o
“Once, once the koala is
caught it comes into the vet
surgery and every koala that
comes in on the project gets
a full health check at the
start and then every six
months after that we
recapture the koala and do a
health check again.”
Zoom to the EVE researcher as he continues to describe the
koala monitoring, pans to a koala on a tree.
V/o
“So at each health check it’s
a comprehensive
examination so that we
make sure that we detect all
of the conditions that are
common in koalas and we
make sure that when we’re
sending them back out into
the wild that they are
healthy…”
Scene zooms to the EVE researcher as he makes bodily signs
on the description of the koala monitoring.
V/o
“…And, and w need to
recapture them every six
months to make sure that
they don’t get Chlamydia
disease which is quite
common or if they do, that
we make sure that we treat
them promptly.”
Scene opens to the EVE researcher and zooms
V/o
“At the comprehensive vet
examination we not only
collect a…”
Cut to a close up of a hand placing orange cones on the road.
V/o
“…bunch of diagnostic
examples but each koala
gets a micro chip and an ear
tag and also the telemetry
devices so that would be a
collar, a radio collar or a bio
telemetry and also an
anklet.”
Cut to the EVE researcher demonstrating on the devises used
on monitoring the koala.
V/o
“And we make sure that we
have two devices on each
koala so that if one falls off
which they commonly do
that we can always find the
koala again and reapply that
tag that’s dropped off.“
V/o
“This project is by far the
biggest and most thorough
one ever done ever on
koalas, so we are very keen
for the…”
V/o
“…data to actually be
analyzed in depth. So, so at
the moment we provide a
fairly I guess rudimentary
analysis of the data you
know the crude stuff, but
there is so much other data
that’s embedded in what we
do that has a lot of value in
terms of koala health and
you know conservation that
we are very keen for
researchers at the
Universities to analyze and
use.”
Zooms to a the EVE researcher on an description of the koala
monitoring program’
V/o
“And what this project
shows us is that if you don’t
go in and measure this stuff
then what you are left with
is assumptions and those
assumptions maybe correct
but often they are not.”
Pans on the adjacent surgical tools, zooms to the EVE
researcher
V/o
“So if you are, if you are
trying to design mitigation
or you know offset
measures to benefit the
population then you are
really doing it with the best
data possible, where if you
don’t collect this stuff then
you are in the dark.”
Cuts to the lab EVE researcher showing a devise for the
tagging of the koala.
V/o
“So this is the transmitter
that will actually go on the
collar and that enables us to
find the collar if it drops
off…”
Scene pans to a man with a captured koala on a cage on an
tagging project. Zooms to a koala on a table
Zooms to a koala being tagged, pans to a EVE researcher.’
Pans to a transmitter held by the researcher.
V/o
“…because the GPS reading
that we get from the collars
is not exactly accurate you
know we may, if the collar
drops off and we are just
using GPS we may have a
you know 30 by 30 meter
area to try and find this
collar.”
Scene opens slightly out of focus to the pinger of the
transmitter.
V/o
“And so we put, put this
little pinger on and that
enables us to find it quickly
and it’s also a backup in
case they get the anklet off,
so we’ve got, we’ve got a
fair bit of redundancy built
into this system.”
Cuts to a koala on a surgical table, pans to the collar .
V/o
“So the weight of these
collars, particularly the
electronics component is far
better than anything else on
the market…”
Pans back to lab environment.
V/o
“…but unfortunately to
balance the color, in other
words to make sure that this
part stays on...”
Zooms to a koala on a cage surrounded by a thicket of leaves
pans to the transmitter being held by the researcher.
V/o
“the back of the koalas neck
instead of sliding around by
gravity to underneath the
neck, we have to put a
weight on. So that brings
the total weight of the collar
up to about 250 grams when
the weight is sitting there.
So it’s about comparable
with some of the GPS
collars on the market. “
A tracker on an orange shirt on a release program of a koala
named Carlos.
V/o
“We are just going to
release Carlos here, this is
his point of capture…”
Zoom to a spot of blue gum on the point of capture of the
koala pans on the tracker releaseing the kola from a cage and
as it climbs a blue gum. Trackers talking on distant voices.
V/o
“…we are bringing him
back to this same spot
because this is his home
range. We are going to
release him into this blue
gum; behind me here it’s
one of their favorite food
trees, so let’s see how we
go.”
Pans to a branches of the blue gum, Mango Murphy talks on
the background. Zooms to a koala
V/o
“I hope you enjoyed that
video. To me it’s just
another example of how we
can build a major
infrastructure project and
work with the community
the environment and
protecting koala’s one of
Australia’s greatest assets.”
Cuts out to a ’koala on a blue gum zooms to a koala on a
tagging program.
V/o
“There’s some great legacies
that will come out of the
research some great
legacies, will come out of
the research…”
Cuts out to a koala lying in the lab
“…some great legacies will
come out of the project and
it’s something that all the
project team is very proud
of.”
