FOSSILS AND EVOLUTION – LAMKOUTAR ZACCARIA – 3A CUCINA
The objectives of this presentation are:
- understanding the relationship between the increasing oxygen in the atmosphere and life
evolution;
- showing examples of evolutionary convergence during the Jurassic period in the Tethys Sea;
- using the Principle of Actualism to describe living organisms in the past;
- introducing the theory of catastrophism of Georges Cuvier.
This work contains pictures and videos about:
- oxygen increasing concentration in the Earth atmosphere;
- microscopic photosynthetic prokaryotes algae living inside calcareous sediments;
- development of life during geological time: from the first bacteria to the first eukaryotic cell,
the origin of the first multicellular organisms;
- the major extinctions happened on Earth ;
- the living organisms of the Submarine Jurassic Park of the Appennine ;
- the geological time scale of the Mesozoic Era ;
- ammonites and nautiluses compared: Principle of Actualism ;
- ichtiosaurs and sharks: struggle for existence.
In the slides there are videos showing students and the teacher simulating processes that
happened in nature billions of years ago.
This work was presented during the “Darwin day” meeting in Ancona (in the Marche region), on
February, the 12th and it was very much appreciated.
