FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 28 June 2007
Object, Attack!!
Exhibition by The Crash Crew – Rohan Bridge, David Creed and Kristine Dragland
Opening Wednesday 11 July 6-8pm
Metro Arts Galleries
When old mattresses, cupboards and televisions are discarded for kerbside collections, The Crash Crew artists
get inspired, and in their upcoming exhibition, Object, Attack!! they present their latest multi-media installation
works of destroyed domestic objects at Metro Arts Galleries, opening 11 July.
In this collaborative project, The Crash Crew artists, Kristine Dragland, David Creed and Rohan Bridge, use
video to record their destruction of discarded household items, some of which will be recreated in the gallery
space by viewers – sending the Object, Attack!! exhibition into a permanent state of transformation.
Visual artist David Creed says, “We wanted to speak of human experience as we constantly push for progress
yet at the same time are obliged to observe what we are leaving behind.”
“For our exhibition, we collected thrown out household items at Brisbane’s kerbside collections and later
destroyed these with hands or other means.
“By destroying the objects we get rid of any previous sentimental or functional value in order to create room for
new ones, and show how objects can take on new meaning and values as they are moved from their original
context and owners.”
The Crash Crew give these objects a new life, so rather than dying a quiet death with other discarded refuse,
these items of furniture are given a loud send-off, a crash and a bang, as they do not die, but instead change
form.
As well as presenting the video work showing this destruction, the Metro Arts Gallery will be littered with a field
of the household debris, inviting viewers to physically navigate through the mess but also to interact with the
objects, to figure out how the work ‘works’.
The Crash Crew bio
The Crash Crew is a collaborative group who utilise a variety of media to create installations that appeal to
multiple senses.
They have a common interest in taking viewers on a journey. That could be a journey where viewers get to
interact with a work through the use of sensors, or a journey where they follow a work’s change and
development over time.
Crash Crew have previously exhibited together in Memoryscape at the Brisbane Powerhouse, in chimaera the
2005 Queensland College of Art Graduate Exhibition, and at the Harries National Digital Art Awards at The
Block, QUT Kelvin Grove.
This year they are exhibiting thematically related projects at Raw Space Gallery, and at Metro Arts as part of the
Metro Arts Visual Arts Program.
