Materials
 8 metric rulers
 8 calculators
 8 100mL graduated cylinders
 8 blocks of Solid A
 8 blocks of Solid B
 8 blocks of Solid C
 8 blocks of Solid D
 8 triple beam balances
 8 500mL beakers
 250mL of Liquid 1
 250mL of Liquid 2
 250mL of Liquid 3
 250mL of Liquid 4
Procedure
1. Go to the lab station that matches your group number.
2. Procedure for lab stations 1-4:
a. Measure the length, width, and height of a single block of your substance by using the metric
ruler. Your measurements should be recorded in the appropriate boxes in the data table and
should be written in centimeters.
b. Measure the mass of the same block of your substance by using the triple beam balance. Your
measurement should be recorded in the appropriate box in the data table and should be written in
grams.
c. Arrange two blocks of your substance the same way the picture at your lab station tells you to
and repeat the length, width, height, and mass measurements.
d. Repeat steps 2a through 2c for the combinations of four blocks, six blocks, and eight blocks of
your substance.
e. Once all of your measurements have been recorded, use the formula (Volume = L x W x H) and
the calculator to calculate the volume of each of the combinations of blocks. Record this answer,
rounded to the nearest tenth, in the appropriate box in the data table. Your answer will be in the
unit cubic centimeters (cm3).
f. Return all the sliders on the triple beam balance to zero and leave the materials at the lab station.
3. Procedure for lab station 5-8:
a. Measure the mass of the empty graduated cylinder by using the triple beam balance. Your
measurement should be recorded in the appropriate box in the data table and should be written in
grams.
b. Pour 20 milliliters of your liquid from the beaker into the graduated cylinder.
c. Measure the mass of the graduated cylinder with the 20mL of liquid in it by using the triple beam
balance. Your measurement should be recorded in the appropriate box in the data table and
should be written in grams.
d. Repeat steps 3b and 3c with 40 milliliters, 60 milliliters, 80 milliliters, and 100 milliliters of your
liquid.
e. Once all of your masses have been recorded, use the formula (Mass of Liquid = Mass of
Cylinder with Liquid – Mass of Empty Cylinder) and the calculator to calculate the mass of each
of the volumes of your liquid. Record this answer, rounded to the nearest tenth, in the
appropriate box in the data table. Your answer will be in the unit grams (g).
f. Return all the sliders on the triple beam balance to zero and pour the liquid back into the beaker.
Rinse the graduated cylinder in the sink and leave all the materials at the lab station.
4. Each group will be responsible for measuring one solid substance and one liquid substance. By the end
of the data collection, all eight substances will have been measured eight times at each of the different
block or volume numbers.
