Associate Professor of Psychiatry – Addiction psychiatry
Dr Ioannis Diakogiannis was born in Thessaloniki in 1956.
Graduated from the American College of Thessaloniki in 1974. Graduated
from the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1980 (MD).
Served in the Greek Air Forces from 1981-983 and served as doctor in rural
area from 1983-1984.
He was specialized in Psychiatry in the A΄& C΄ Psychiatric departments of
A.U.TH and in the Dept of Psychiatry in Yale University-USA.
He did a fellowship in substance addiction treatment unit ( S.A.T.U) Yale
University-USA 1989-1990.
From 1991-1998 worked as a scientific associate in the Department of
Psychiatry and the department of Pharmacology of the Aristotle University of
Thessaloniki. Doctorate thesis in 1992.
Lecturer of Psychiatry 1998/Assistant Professor of Psychiatry 2002/ Associate
Professor in 2008.
Since 1998 is the Head of the Drug Dependence Unit of the C΄ Department of
Psychiatry of A.U.TH .Since 2004 he is the Coordinator of the elective lesson
“Substance addiction”
Dr Diakogiannis has written around 95 scientific papers which have been
presented in scientific meetings or have been published in scientific
journals(34), 3 chapters in books and was responsible for the publication of a
book for alcohol addiction (Greek version).
He is a member of many Scientific Societies. He was the National associate
representative (2001-2004) and representative (2004-2008) of Greece to the
Scientific Committee of the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug
addiction in Lisbon Portugal from . Member of the European Commission’s
Projects for Alcohol <Bridging the Gap>, <brief interventions for alcohol
abuse> and < building capacity> and <Phepa>. Secretary General of the
Greek Society for the Study of Addictive Substances. Member of the advisor
committee of the South East European Society for Neurology and
Psychiatry. Member of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.
Secretary general of the branch for Psychiatry of addictions of the Greek
Psychiatric association. Member of the editorial board of the scientific journal
Biological Psychiatry and Neurology.
Married to Thalia Gkatzouli, nuclear medecine doctor and he iw father of one
son.
