We are learning to...
1. Identify how the body is organized into cells, tissues, organs, and organ
systems:
2. identify the major functions of tissues in the body. The major function of the
tissues in our body is to form into organs creating organ systems.
Warm-up
Activities
What is the relationship between cells, tissues, and organs? Give an example within
the human body.
The body is organized by the name the shape and the function of the
cell/tissue/organs/systems. Like bone cells, turn into bone tissue, and bone tissue
turns into bones, and the bones that form together form into the skeletal system.
1. As you complete the dissection of the chicken wing answer the questions.
a. Examine the outside of the chicken wing. Describe it. Wet, slimy, squishy, pale,
bumpy texture.
b. What kind of tissue is the skin made of? What is its function? Looks like
epithelial tissue. It is to protect the inside. And to make body waterproof.
c. What kind of cells is the skin made of? Epithelial cells. What is the function?
To protect what’s inside. Why are the cells in this tissue flat and all connected
together? To make sure they stay tight together and protect.
d. Use the scalpel to cut open the chicken wing from tip to tip. Then pry open
the wing.
e. Locate the clear tissue connecting the skin to the muscle. What kind of tissue
is this? connective tissue. What is its function? To hold it together.
f. Locate any yellowish globs of tissue. This is fat tissue. What kind of cells is
this made of (both names)?fat and adipose. What is the function of this tissue?
To store access energy. Why are these cells globular, with a lot of empty
space in them? To be able to hold plenty of energy.
g. Why would the chicken wing need a lot of fat tissue in it? Because the wing
moves a lot so it needs a lot of energy.
h. Locate the pinkish muscle tissue. Do you think this is striated, cardiac, or
smooth muscle? Strained. Why? Because cardiac is by the heart, and smooth
muscle moves automatically.
i. What types of cells is muscle tissue made of?muscle cells Why do these cells
have such a long, stringy shape? So they can extend and extract
j. Locate any long , white tissue that holds muscles to other muscles. These are
tendons. What type of tissue are they? Connective tissue
k. Locate the bones. What types of cells are these bones made of (both names)?
Bone and Osteocytes. What is their function? To keep the body together.
l. Try the pull the bones apart. Are they easy to pull apart? no
m. The bones are held together by ligaments. What kind of tissue are ligaments
made of? Connective tissue.
n. At the end of each bone you will find white connective tissue called cartilage.
What is the function of this type of tissue? To protect whatever is inside
o. In your observation of the chicken wing did you find any blood tissue? yes
What types of cells are in blood? Red and white blood cells. What are their
functions? To transport oxygen and energy to the wing. Why does a chicken
wing need blood tissue to flow through it? So that it could move.
2. Upon completion of the dissection clean up.
a. Throw away the newspaper, paper plate, paper towels, gloves, and all parts of the
chicken wing.
b. Place all dissecting instruments in the bin on the front table.
c. Wash your lab area with a disinfectant wipe.
d. Wash your hands thoroughly.
3. Make sure everyone in your group has a copy of the daily log posted to their wiki
page.
4. Use the information in the daily log to complete the homework assignment. It is
due on Monday, 10-5-09.

None
Use RASE to answer each of the following questions. Post your answers to the wiki.
Due Monday, 10-5-09.
1. Why is a chicken wing considered to be an organ?
2. What tissues are found in a chicken wing and how does each help the wing do its
job?
3. How do the different tissues found in the wing work together and help each other?
