Book F Chapter 2
Lesson 4
VOCAB:
Foliated: the texture of metamorphic rock in which the mineral grains
are arranged in planes or bands
Nonfoliated: the texture of metamorphic rock in which the mineral
grains are not arranged in planes or bands
Metamorphism:
 Rocks undergo the process of metamorphism when exposed to
high heat (temperatures) and pressure deep inside the Earth.
 Rocks DO NOT MELT during the metamorphic process
Contact Metamorphism:
-rocks are only exposed to high temperatures to cause the rocks to
undergo change
-heated by nearby magma
-occurs near igneous intrusions
Regional Metamorphism:
-rocks are exposed to both high temperatures and high pressure to
cause rocks to change
-occurs deep within Earth’s crust
-found beneath most continental rock formations
FOLIATED
 Rocks have minerals that
are arranged invisible bands
or layers
NONFOLIATED
 Rocks do not have any
visible bands or layers
 These rocks usually contain
only a few minerals.
