Physics 2220 Exam 1 Coverage Summer 2016 The first exam will be on Friday afternoon, 24 June, from 2.00-4.00 p.m. In JFB 103. You may use a calculator and one ordinary sheet of paper (both sides) with notes and formulas. Problem 1 (a) Similar to Problem 1 in the WebAssign HW Set 1: two electric charges suspended by light strings and in equilibrium. (b) Similar to Problem 2 in the WebAssign HW Set 1: With two charges fixed in position, find a point on the line through them where a third charge would be in equilibrium (or, in other words, where the resultant electric field would be zero). Problem 2 (a) This will be a conceptual question involving Gauss's law. (b) Given a solid insulator having a specified spherically symmetric volume charge density, use Gauss's law and calculus to determine the electric field at various distances r from the centre. Problem 3 (a) Similar to Problem 1 in WebAssign HW Set 3. (b) Similar to Problem 2 in WebAssign HW Set 3: Given a charged rod of length L, use calculus to find the electrostatic potential V and/or the electric field E at a specified point. Problem 4 Similar to Problem 7 in WebAssign HW Set 3: You will be given an array of capacitors in a circuit, with a specified potential difference across the whole combination. In addition to finding the potential difference across each capacitor and the charge on each capacitor, there will be some questions involving the electrostatic energy stored, and one or more of the capacitors may have its plates filled with a dielectric substance having specified dielectric constant x.
