Research Support
ƒ Recently, Dr. Lim’s research is more focused on the cancer biomarker discovery. She is developing
independent and significant predictive measures of tumor behavior for head and neck squamous cell
carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma. Quantitative measurements of protein expression either in
tissues or sera utilizing multidimensional separation and mass spectrometry have been major tools to
achieve the goal. A few peptide markers, which distinguished different tumor behaviors, have been
discovered successfully. The results will be integrated with the RNA expression data to identify the best
potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers to develop clinical diagnostics as a part of the system
biology approach.
ƒ
Dr. Lim’s skills in the mass spectrometry area have been directed toward neuropeptidomics.
Neuropeptides influence a wide range of physiological processes including feeding and body weight
regulation, circadian rhythms, sleep, pain, fear, anxiety, learning and memory, and reward
mechanisms. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of the vast array of neuropeptides are important for
understanding brain function. Many challenges, however, exist with their analysis, including low
concentrations and difficulties in labeling them for accurate quantitation. She has developed novel
labeling approaches to facilitate neuropeptide quantitation. This method has been utilized to find up- or
down-regulated neuropeptides under different stimuli to help in understanding the function of different
neuropeptide hormones.
