“Coniugazione di fase in un sistema WDM”
Abstract
The main concern of the thesis is the evaluation of third-order nonlinearities (as self-phase
modulation SPM and cross-phase modulation XPM) and their interaction with chromatic
dispersion in optical phase conjugation and their impact on system performances.
Overview
Optical phase conjugation is a promising technique that could be used in advanced optical
communication systems to perfectly compensate chromatic dispersion on a wide bandwidth
placing an optical phase conjugator in the middle of the optical link. In this work we evaluate the
performance of a new technique (Mid Nonlinearity Temporal Inversion – MNTI) in the mitigation
of nonlinearities and chromatic dispersion using an optical phase conjugator (OPC) in a
wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system. The analysis is due principally using a
commercial simulator (OptSim) in systems limited by SPM (as WDM systems with a channel
spacing of few nanometers) or by XPM (as Dense WDM systems with channel spacing of 25, 50
and 100 GHz) in an optical link of standard single mode fiber (SSMF) or of non-zero dispersion
shifted fiber (NZDS-). The results of the simulation show that the OPC can mitigate the SPM on
a wide bandwidth, in particular it can compensate perfectly SPM in a NZDS- link. The effects of
SPM, XPM and chromatic dispersion in DWDM systems are less mitigated by the OPC, in
particular XPM drastically reduce the bandwidth of compensation.
The simulation results are then experimentally evaluated on a real system composed by a single
channel at 1535 nm and an OPC realized by a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) with RZ
data at 10 Gb/s over 600 km of NZDS- fiber.

The main concern of the thesis is the development of a LabView interface between pc and an
electrical spectrum analyzer (ESA). We also studied classical optical modulation formats as
OOK, DPSK and DQPSK in terms of spectral properties and eye diagrams.
