Equations and Inequalities C2.0 Mathematics 6 Parent Resource Marking Period 3: Expressions and Equations Marking Period 3 includes 4 topics of study, listed below. This resource is for Topic 3. Topic 1 Topic 2 Introducing Algebraic Expressions Properties and Equivalency Topic 4 Relationships between Variables Learning Goals by Common Core State Standard Topic Students will be able to... Equations and Inequalities Topic 3 Equations and Inequalities Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions, equations, and inequalities when solving a real-world or mathematical problem. Use substitution to determine whether a given number makes an equation or inequality true. Represent the solutions of inequalities on number lines. Instructional videos in the hyperlinks above are meant to support C2.0 content, but may use vocabulary or strategies not emphasized by MCPS. The Common Core State Standards require a balance of three fundamental components that result in rigorous mathematics acquisition: deep conceptual understanding, procedural skill, and mathematical applications and modeling. RIGOR Deep Conceptual Understanding Equations and Inequalities Applications and Modeling Procedural Skill Students will understand that the solution of an equation or inequality is the value of the variable that makes the equation or inequality true. Students will build accuracy when solving equations and inequalities. Students will apply the idea of maintaining the equality of both sides of an equation or inequality to solve simple one-step equations and inequalities. C2.0 Mathematics 6 Parent Resource Page Marking Period 3: Expressions and Equations Topic 3: Equations and Inequalities Learning Experiences by Common Core State Standard In school, your child will… Represent equations using different models o Tape diagram At home, your child can… 3x 9 Solve for unknowns in real-world situations and practice representing the situations as equations: o I bought some apples at the farmer’s market last week and then I bought 4 more at the store. Now I have 16 apples. If I still haven’t eaten any of my apples, how many did I buy last week? a 4 16 o Topic 3: Equations and Inequalities 2m8 o Number lines 3x 9 2m8 Solve equations using inverse operations Graph solutions to inequalities on number lines v4 9 4 4 v 5 x x 6 x 3 x4 The inequalities above are presented with no context, therefore all solutions must be considered. In problems with context, students need to reason about the solution. For example, if the first inequality represented greater than 2 people, only the whole numbers should be represented on the number line because you can’t have 2.5 people. I have saved 3 times as much money as Pete. Pete saved $13.56. How much money did I save? 3 13.56 m . Determine what it would take to set a world record. o Explore the Guinness Book of World Records website. o Write an inequality to show what it would take to set or tie the record.
