4th Grade Flyer January 2016 LITERACY Currently, students are reading different types of informational text. Later this month fourth graders will be reading a variety of Greek myths in which they will explore the characteristics of this genre. They will describe the relationship between characters and the setting of a story using specific details in the text. Also, students will compare the treatment of similar themes, and make connections between a myth and a visual presentation of the myth. In addition, students will describe a character in depth based on key details from the text, and demonstrate understanding of words by relating them to their opposites. The overarching goal is to have students familiar with the structure, characters, details, and vocabulary associated with myths. individual research, the groups will explore informational formats of newsletters and how their text features convey information. Student will then write their own paragraphs. These paragraphs will then be combined with text features for greater informational clarity of their determined topic. Jamestown. These early colonies will serve as a basis for comparing settlements and determining the motives and difficulties the early colonists faced. SCIENCE MATH Students are currently finishing their units on division and measurement. Later in the month they will find factor pairs and multiples. They will also determine whether a number is prime or composite based on its factor pairs. Towards the end of the month they will begin a unit on fractions. They will use benchmarks and models to compare fractions. This study will culminate with students placing a fraction on a number line. WRITING SOCIAL STUDIES Students are currently finishing their community profile and business analysis. During the middle of the month student groups will choose a topic from science or social studies and briefly conduct research for a newsletter. After the Students are currently finishing their unit on economics. During the middle of the month they will begin a study of the St. Augustine settlement and determine how it impacted the Native Americans. They will also learn about the settlements of Roanoke and Students are currently finishing their unit on environmental science. Later this month they will study weather conditions, properties of water on Earth, and weatherrelated technology. Some of this technology was used in earlier grades, but the current emphasis will be to use this technology to collect data, make claims, and justify seasonal weather conditions. GO FOR THE GOLD!
